About the Role

Conduct the field portion of the Access-Point Angler Intercept Survey (APAIS), a research study sponsored by NOAA Fisheries. This involves interviewing marine recreational anglers face-to-face at various sites, collecting data on their fishing experiences, and identifying/measuring caught fish.

Responsibilities

• Complete training, including survey procedures and fish identification tests.
• Follow documented APAIS survey procedures.
• Travel to assigned fishing access sites to interview anglers.
• Occasionally work on head boats for at-sea data collection.
• Identify key fish species with high accuracy.
• Complete surveys on a tablet and submit to supervisor.
• Serve as a point of contact for state fisheries management agencies and anglers.
• Answer questions and explain the importance of the study.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Must be at least 20 years old.
• Must have a valid driver's license.
• Must have access to a personal vehicle.
• Must be willing to travel reasonable distances to assigned sites.
• Must be available on weekends, weekdays, evenings, nights, and holidays.
• Must be comfortable approaching and speaking with strangers.
• Must be comfortable handling, measuring, and weighing fish.
• Must be comfortable working outside for extended periods in variable weather conditions.
• Must have meticulous attention to detail.
• Must be able to complete, organize, and safely store electronic data and paperwork.
• Must demonstrate proven communication and interpersonal skills.
• Must be able to work independently, organize work, and solve problems following prescribed procedures.
• Must be eligible to work in the United States.
