About the Role
We are looking for a growth-minded Controller to join our corporate accounting team. The company is positioned for rapid growth, and we seek a professional who can make an immediate impact.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with project managers to ensure timely and accurate accounting and reporting of job cost information, including percentage of completion, budgets, contracts, adjustments, and billings.
- Ensure estimate changes or projected adjustments are recorded promptly.
- Prepare monthly job cost and percentage of completion schedules and budget variance reports.
- Post Work-In-Progress journal entries to the General Ledger.
- Meet with project management teams weekly to ensure accuracy of project billing.
- Review accuracy of subcontractor and vendor billings and associated paperwork (lien waivers, certifications, etc.).
- Contribute to ensuring profitable construction bids.
- Analyze trial balance for accuracy, completeness, and conformance to standards, and process transactions for month-end analysis.
- Oversee and execute accounting processes, including internal/external billing, cash receipts, collections, and accounts payable; act as backup or handle overflow work.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and analysis.
- Maintain a system for state registrations, business, and tax licenses.
- Maintain the General Ledger and create/maintain reconciliations for all balance sheet accounts.
- Prepare and distribute a 13-week cash flow forecast; monitor daily cash balance and activity.
- Consistently analyze financial data and present accurate financial reports concisely.
- Ensure and/or implement adequate documented policies, procedures, and financial systems with internal controls.
- Prepare for and participate in audits by external parties (accountants, unions, IRS, etc.).
- Assist in hiring, training, and structuring a high-quality accounting department.
- Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
- Prepare necessary reports for external parties (banks, creditors, insurance/surety companies, underwriters, etc.).
- Identify and implement process improvements.
Requirements
- Ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
- Strong desire to take initiative and problem-solve independently.
- Ability to self-manage office tasks with minimal supervision.
- Highly proficient with Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams) and ability to learn new systems quickly.
- 5+ years of experience in construction accounting and management of a construction accounting department.
- Working knowledge of Construction Accounting Software; Viewpoint Spectrum knowledge is highly preferred.
- Experience with data analytics and visualization tools.
- Experience managing external auditors and understanding CPA Audit requirements.
