About the Role
The Operations/Security Director oversees daily operations, security functions, and facilities management for a DHS long-term shelter site. This role ensures full compliance with city and state regulations while leading operations and security teams to maintain a safe and secure environment for residents and staff.
Responsibilities
- Supervise facility and program operations staff and external vendors.
- Collaborate with the Site Director to meet contractual obligations and DHS standards.
- Partner with senior management for proposals, audits, and reports.
- Develop operational goals, procedures, and emergency protocols.
- Conduct monthly facility inspections of infrastructure and systems.
- Manage the work order/ticketing system and maintain operations logs and inventories.
- Oversee procurement, inventory control, and equipment tracking.
- Negotiate service contracts and lease terms.
- Ensure timely renewal of licenses and permits from regulatory agencies.
- Assist with DHS inspections and address compliance findings.
- Enforce OSHA standards and Universal Precautions policies.
- Coordinate fire drills, evacuations, and emergency readiness.
- Monitor staff compliance with fire safety and security certifications.
- Serve as the primary contact for operational emergencies.
- Recruit, supervise, and evaluate operations and security personnel.
- Develop staffing plans and schedules to maintain 24/7 coverage.
- Maintain labor relations and liaise with unions.
- Support professional development through mentoring and training.
- Coordinate site security operations to ensure safety of residents and staff.
- Develop and update security policies and patrol routines.
- Investigate incidents and prepare reports for DHS and internal tracking.
- Coordinate with NYPD, FDNY, and emergency responders.
- Represent the shelter at meetings with city agencies and community boards.
Requirements
- Minimum 5–7 years of facilities or operations management experience.
- Experience in a residential, shelter, or social services setting.
- Valid New York State Security Guard License.
- FDNY F-80 Certificate of Fitness or ability to obtain within 30 days.
- Valid NYS Driver’s License.
- Knowledge of NYC shelter systems, DHS requirements, and building operations.
- Experience supervising diverse teams and managing in unionized environments.
- Ability to respond to emergencies and make decisions under pressure.
- Ability to travel to offsite meetings throughout New York City.
- Ability to ascend/descend stairs in the shelter facility.
- Must be on-call 24/7 for emergencies.
