About the Role
Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, on the deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Maintain constant, active surveillance of the pool area, scanning the water at all times to the 10/10 standard.
- Recognize and understand the "zero tolerance" policy as it applies to member safety.
- Remain positioned properly in an elevated chair or at the water’s edge.
- Maintain all rescue equipment on self at all times on duty.
- Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Know and understand all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately.
- Know, understand, and consistently apply safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
- Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
- Monitor chemical levels at the beginning and end of the day, as required, and take appropriate action.
- Maintain accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
- Do not engage in behaviors that distract from primary duty of scanning the water.
- Attend all staff meetings and in-service trainings as required.
- Maintain effective relationships with members, participants, and staff.
- Check and replenish supplies in first aid kits.
- Carry out additional assignments and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
Requirements
- Minimum age of 18.
- Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
- Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
