About the Role

Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, on the deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain constant, active surveillance of the pool area, scanning the water at all times to the 10/10 standard.
  • Recognize and understand the "zero tolerance" policy as it applies to member safety.
  • Remain positioned properly in an elevated chair or at the water’s edge.
  • Maintain all rescue equipment on self at all times on duty.
  • Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  • Know and understand all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately.
  • Know, understand, and consistently apply safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  • Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
  • Monitor chemical levels at the beginning and end of the day, as required, and take appropriate action.
  • Maintain accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
  • Do not engage in behaviors that distract from primary duty of scanning the water.
  • Attend all staff meetings and in-service trainings as required.
  • Maintain effective relationships with members, participants, and staff.
  • Check and replenish supplies in first aid kits.
  • Carry out additional assignments and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.

Skills
