About the Role
Chatelaine is seeking an Editor-in-Chief to define a new vision for its English edition. This role involves understanding the needs of Canadian women and building journalism, service, conversation, and community to meet them. It's a brand leadership position overseeing print, web, newsletters, social, video, audio, and events, requiring strategic decision-making on brand presence and voice.
Responsibilities
- Define the next chapter of Chatelaine, including its target audience, values, and future direction.
- Build an editorial agenda focused on issues, ambitions, pleasures, and pressures relevant to women's lives.
- Maintain high standards for accuracy, fairness, originality, voice, and visual execution.
- Ensure the brand remains Canadian at its core while seeking international relevance.
- Lead content strategy across print, web, newsletters, search, social, video, audio, events, and emerging platforms.
- Prioritize audience and ideas to select the most appropriate content formats.
- Develop a system for adapting content across multiple platforms without compromising quality or increasing workload.
- Commission, edit, write, produce, or host content as needed.
- Own audience growth across all platforms, setting clear goals for reach, engagement, loyalty, and subscriptions.
- Utilize audience data and editorial judgment to inform content decisions.
- Develop repeatable content franchises and formats to build audience habits and brand assets.
- Attract new and younger audiences while retaining existing loyal readers.
- Lead, coach, and challenge a team of editors, writers, producers, designers, freelancers, and contributors.
- Collaborate with other editors on cross-brand initiatives and editorial planning.
- Set clear priorities, protect time for ambitious work, and foster a culture of testing and constructive disagreement.
- Build a diverse contributor network reflecting a wide range of women's experiences and expertise.
- Manage the editorial calendar, workflows, and budget effectively.
- Represent the brand in media, at events, and in public conversations.
- Host interviews, video, audio, and live events with authority and warmth.
- Build relationships with writers, creators, experts, and cultural leaders.
- Ensure the Editor-in-Chief and brand are recognizable, accountable, and present.
- Collaborate with audience, marketing, product, events, sales, and branded content teams to drive sustainable growth.
- Develop editorial franchises that support subscriptions, sponsorships, events, and commerce.
- Provide commercial partners with a clear understanding of the audience and brand while maintaining editorial independence.
- Track key performance metrics and adapt strategies as needed.
Requirements
- Deep editorial leadership experience in a newsroom, media company, or content organization, with a proven track record of leading people and change.
- Experience building and growing content across multiple formats, including print or long-form journalism, digital, newsletters, social media, and events.
- Excellent editorial instincts with the ability to identify ideas, sharpen angles, edit copy, and judge overall presentation.
- Strong writing and editing skills grounded in reporting and journalistic standards.
- Production expertise to manage the process from concept to finished work, including talent, format, visuals, schedule, budget, distribution, and follow-through.
- A strong, influential, and relevant network of contributors and creatives.
- A deep understanding of the lives and interests of women in Canada, with a curiosity to stay informed about evolving dynamics.
- Comfort with data, budgets, and business decisions, able to articulate both creative and operational justifications for investment.
- Confidence as a spokesperson and host, credible on camera and stage, and skilled at making others interesting.
