About the Role

The RECE staff is responsible for the care of children in group settings by working with other team members to plan, supervise and implement the daily program. This position is responsible for providing appropriate direction, encouragement and support to the children, their families, staff, students, and volunteers in addition to being flexible, resourceful, sensitive, and respectful of individual needs.

Responsibilities

  • Guidance and care of children in groups, and planning and implementation of daily programs that enhance social, physical, intellectual, cognitive, and emotional development.
  • Abiding by Unit and WoodGreen policies and regulations as stated in the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014 and City of Toronto’s AQI, including maintaining legal staff: child ratios and working closely with casual staff during absenteeism.
  • Setting reasonable limits according to child's developmental stage, and giving appropriate direction, encouragement, and support individually and in groups, including extra support for individual children when necessary.
  • Recognizing, dealing with, and defining unusual behavior, reporting to the Manager if unable to resolve, and working with professional and resource persons as required.
  • Working as a team with other staff, participating in daily program activities, and contributing to weekly planning.
  • Recording daily attendance, receiving medical information, and reporting to appropriate personnel.
  • Ensuring daily safety, health, and hygienic conditions of children, including dispensing medications, getting medical attention in emergencies, monitoring health, alerting parents, consulting medical professionals, prioritizing health and safety in program setup, completing incident reports, informing parents, reporting serious occurrences/injuries, following fire and emergency procedures, and following diapering/toileting procedures.
  • Safely escorting children outside the centre and providing adequate and appropriate supervision on all outings.
  • Developing and maintaining good relationships with parents, including participating in interviews, informal communication, attending meetings, and assisting with difficulties.
  • Preparing written reports on children, completing assessments and developmental checklists, and informing parents about children's progress.
  • Maintaining equipment and furnishings, informing the Manager of replenishment needs, sharing housekeeping responsibilities, and assessing equipment needs and making recommendations.
  • Maintaining the orderly arrangement, appearance, decor, and learning environment of program room(s).
  • Training and evaluating student placements and volunteers, and supervising casual staff.
  • Ensuring staff timetables provide adequate and appropriate supervision of children at all times and meet program needs, working during scheduled times to maintain ratios, and following shift schedules which change and rotate.
  • Reporting any signs of physical or mental abuse of children in care to the proper authorities.
  • Participating in other WoodGreen child care programs as scheduled or required.
  • Developing and maintaining effective working relationships and communication with appropriate internal and external personnel, including agency administrative staff, catering service staff, elementary school staff, public health staff, and other community resources.
  • Checking outdoor facilities for safety, reporting unsafe conditions, informing appropriate staff when playground cleaning is required, and assuring proper cleaning is maintained.
  • Performing housekeeping duties such as sweeping, disinfecting washroom/diaper change facilities, cleaning and setting up lunch tables, preparing and serving lunches, laundry, and other designated duties.
  • Upgrading training and education as directed by WoodGreen Community Services.
  • Ensuring anti-racism objectives and community development principles of the organization are achieved within the program.
  • Representing the unit on internal staff committees as directed by the Manager and/or V-P, Child Care & Family Services.
  • Participating in regular supervisory sessions with the Manager and in EmPerform performance management system.

Requirements

  • Early Childhood Education Diploma or equivalent.
  • Current RECE (Registered Early Childhood Educator) Certification from CECE.
  • Valid Standard First Aid/CPR-C.
  • Health assessment, including up-to-date immunization records and TB test required.
  • Experience in licensed child care work and activities.

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with children, parents, staff, teachers, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all information related to children, parents and staff.
  • Ability to speak a second language is considered an asset.

  • External Rate: $52,670.76/year
  • Internal Rate: $53,745.67/year
