About the Role
The Canadian Opera Company (COC) is seeking a full-time Assistant Technical Director to help lead the Production team in bringing operas and events to life, and managing the technical department's daily operations. Responsibilities
- Coordinate all technical elements and documentation for opera productions with the Technical Director, second ATD, and Lighting and Video Coordinator.
- Communicate with other opera companies regarding technical details for rentals or co-productions.
- Estimate, forecast, and track expenses for shows and events, including labor, equipment, and materials, to ensure budget adherence.
- Attend rehearsals, performances, events, and work calls to oversee technical execution and follow-up on notes.
- Serve as a central information point between creative teams, stage management, shops, crew, and artistic/community partnership staff.
- Communicate with workshop staff to ensure timely completion of builds, repairs, and modifications.
- Participate in production meetings to review plans, identify issues, and plan corrective actions.
- Assist the second ATD in coordinating deliveries, international shipping, and logistics.
- Create risk assessments for productions and coordinate necessary safety precautions.
- Participate in planning future productions, which may include international travel for research.
- Perform production-related research and development.
- Coordinate technical crews, assigning and supervising work for smooth setup and operation of productions, rehearsals, and events.
- Supervise work, maintenance, and show calls for all COC activities.
- Oversee shop builds of new productions and rebuilds or refurbishments of sets.
- Compile, prioritize, and distribute notes, tasks, and priorities to crews.
- Ensure all work is performed safely and in accordance with Health and Safety requirements.
- Track production expenses using COC’s purchase order databases (MS Business Central).
- Ensure productions are correctly archived with as-played drawings, load-in/out notes, and timings.
- Populate and maintain internal databases (ArtsVision, MS Business Central, MS Outlook).
- Verify crew timesheets promptly.
- Communicate with facilities and security staff for interdepartmental matters.
Requirements
- Post-secondary education or experience in the technical/production field.
- Extensive knowledge of stagecraft, theatre production, scenic construction, rigging, automation, lighting, and video.
- Experience in a repertory setting.
- Experience in a fly house theatre.
- Experience in budgeting and personnel management.
- Superior organization and communication skills (verbal and written).
- Outstanding interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally, confidentially, and tactfully with all staff.
- Proficiency in CAD drafting and MS Office (Excel and Word).
- Valid Class G driver’s license and a clean driving record.
