About the Role

Join Toronto Fire Services as a firefighter, serving the public in Canada's largest and most diverse city. This role is critical for emergency response and preparedness, upholding the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.

Responsibilities

• Respond promptly to fire, medical, rescue, and other emergency and non-emergency calls.
• Perform firefighting, forcible entry, search and rescue, hose management, ladder climbing, and overhaul duties.
• Provide emergency medical treatment, CPR, hazardous materials scene support, and property/environmental conservation.
• Operate fire apparatus and vehicles in compliance with traffic laws.
• Operate firefighting equipment such as pumps, hoses, ladders, generators, and extrication equipment.
• Conduct inspections to ensure fire/life safety compliance at emergency scenes.
• Clean, inspect, and maintain all equipment and apparatus after emergency responses.
• Work effectively with crew members and other first responders.
• Perform daily cleaning, inspection, and maintenance of equipment and apparatus.
• Conduct routine preventative maintenance tasks.
• Maintain fire station, equipment, quarters, and grounds.
• Complete all assigned training and retraining.
• Participate in pre-planning to familiarize with response areas and buildings.
• Educate the public on fire prevention and safety.
• Participate in Pre-Incident Fire Planning.
• Conduct fire safety inspections.
• Adhere to the Chain of Command.
• Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
• Be psychologically and physically prepared for emergencies.
• Work at heights or in confined spaces as required.
• Wear supplied safety equipment and uniforms.
• Work effectively and positively with diverse colleagues in close quarters.
• Perform all duties safely and effectively in accordance with City policies.
• Follow directions from senior officers.

Requirements

• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
• Must possess a valid Ontario Driver’s Licence class D or higher (A, B or C) with a Z endorsement.
• Must have successfully completed the OFAI Candidate Testing Services (CTS) Stages.
• CTS Certificate for Stage One Firefighter Aptitude and Character Test (does not need to be current).
• CTS Certificate for Stage Two Hearing Assessment must be current and valid by August 17, 2026.
• CTS Certificate for Stage Two Vision Assessment must be current and valid by August 17, 2026.
• CTS Certificate for Stage Two Encapsulated Treadmill Test must be current and valid by August 17, 2026.
• CTS Certificate for Stage Three Firefighter Physical Aptitude Job – Related Tests (FPAT) must be current and valid by August 17, 2026.
• Must have successfully completed NFPA 1001 Level 1 & 2 prior to application submission from an accredited institution.
• Must possess a valid Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification.
• Advanced Medical Care Assistant (AEMCA) certification will also be considered.
• Must work on a 24-hour shift schedule, including weekends and holidays, averaging 42 hours per week.
• Must be able to provide a Vulnerable Sector Check.
• Must be fit for sustained, intense physical and psychological effort.
• Must possess water survival skills; pass the Lifesaving Society’s Canadian Swim to Survive Standard.
• Willingness and ability to work in extremely adverse and dangerous situations.
• Mechanical aptitude.
• Familiarity with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
