About the Role
The Erie County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) seeks a full-time Staff Attorney for its Immigration Program in Batavia, NY. This role represents detained individuals facing deportation at the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility. The position offers a hybrid remote/in-office schedule after an initial 3-month period and values work/life balance with reasonable hours and minimal weekend work.
Responsibilities
- Handle individual caseload and represent clients before DOJ-EOIR, DHS, and BIA defending detained low-income immigrants subject to removal.
- Work collaboratively with Paralegals and Social Workers, acting as an additional resource.
- Manage grant/data reporting.
- Undertake special projects and community outreach/education as directed.
- Perform local travel to and from the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility and occasional trips to the Buffalo office.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Admitted to practice law or pending bar admission.
- Possess organizational skills to manage cases efficiently and track/report data accurately.
- Ability to work cooperatively with staff and supervisors, and independently.
- Strong oral and written advocacy skills.
- Proficiency in legal research software.
- A desire for a career in litigation defending detained low-income immigrants.
- Valid driver's license and regular access to a reliable vehicle are required.
Skills
- Spanish or French fluency (preferred).
- One year of litigation experience, preferably in immigration removal proceedings (preferred).

Salary/Compensations
- $72,725.00 (Year 1) to $95,106.00 (Year 9)
