About the Role

Under limited supervision, designs and assists in the design of electric utility system facilities, including generation, electric substations, overhead and underground transmission and distribution lines, network systems, protection systems, SCADA, Energy Management, market operation and settlement systems, street lighting, and other electric system facilities. This position is within the Power Production and Electrical Services Delivery department of Austin Energy.

Responsibilities

Prepares and/or assists in the preparation of standards, equipment specifications, design procedures, and test procedures.
Performs and/or assists in power system studies such as protective coordination, fault studies, load flows, service reliability, power quality, and voltage stability.
Prepares or assists in engineering design and develops drawings and other documents for generation, transmission, distribution, substations, and SCADA/EMS.
Prepares or assists in the preparation and maintenance of drawings, circuit maps, diagrams, charts, databases, and plans.
Provides assistance to customers, developers, and other City Departments on technical matters relevant to electric utility services.
Provides technical and financial inputs for projects in the electric utility budget process.
Prepares and/or assists in the preparation of safety procedures for electric facilities.
Works closely with field personnel to support project energization.
Performs power system steady state, short circuit, and economic assessments.
Assists in NERC, FERC, PUC, and ERCOT compliance activities.

Requirements

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience to perform essential job functions.
Knowledge of engineering design principles applicable to electric utility operations.
Knowledge of mathematical techniques such as trigonometry, calculus, and coordinate geometry.
Knowledge of modern methods, materials, and techniques of assigned discipline.
Knowledge of leadership roles and responsibilities.
Knowledge of applicability of established engineering principles and methods.
Knowledge of various computer software programs applicable to position.
Knowledge of preparation of cost estimates.
Ability to perform engineering calculations and analyze engineering problems.
Ability to read and comprehend simple specifications, plans, and shop drawings.
Ability to interpret and make decisions in conformance with established policies and practices.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in written formats to coworkers and the public.
This position requires a criminal background investigation, NERC personal risk assessment, and ERCOT Digital Certificate.

Experience Level

Three (3) years' experience related to the job
Master's degree in engineering may substitute for experience up to two (2) years
Experience in Transmission Planning (preferred)
Experience using Siemens PTI PSSE or similar software package (preferred)
Experience in creating/updating transmission level steady state and short circuit database updates (preferred)

Education Level

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering
