About the Role

The Surgical Technologist manages instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures. This role requires anticipating surgeon needs, maintaining a sterile field, and ensuring high-quality patient care throughout operative procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Gather, check, and open supplies and equipment for surgical procedures
  • Perform surgical scrubs and wear appropriate PPE
  • Set up sterile back tables and Mayo stands
  • Perform initial instrument, sharps, and sponge counts
  • Assist team members with gowning, gloving, and patient draping
  • Participate in surgical site and patient verification
  • Anticipate surgeon needs by passing instruments and supplies
  • Measure and pass medications, hemostatic agents, and irrigation solutions
  • Hold retractors or instruments as directed
  • Sponge or suction the operative site
  • Apply electrocautery to clamps
  • Cut suture material as directed
  • Coordinate camera or robotic arms during endoscopic surgery
  • Maintain sterile technique standards
  • Prepare sterile dressings and immobilization devices
  • Prepare and pass off specimens
  • Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization
  • Assist with terminal room cleaning and room turnover
  • Participate in debriefing and quality improvement practices
  • Review patient charts and verify surgery consent
  • Assist with patient transfers to the operating table
  • Monitor patient comfort and provide reassurance
  • Assist with patient positioning and normothermia maintenance
  • Assist anesthesia providers
  • Apply electro-surgical grounding pads, tourniquets, and monitors
  • Complete patient skin prep
  • Keep accurate records and update surgeon preference cards
  • Transport patients to the post-anesthesia care unit
  • Perform urinary catheterization as required
  • Maintain quality reporting, daily logs, and supply ordering

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of training
  • Current certification as a Surgical Technologist or evidence of employment as a Surgical Technologist before September 1, 2009
  • Current BLS certification
  • Knowledge of established safety regulations
  • Knowledge of techniques to prevent disease spread
  • Knowledge of emergency equipment and medications
