About the Role
This role focuses on providing medical and clinical support services to patients, performing surgical duties involving excision or incision of a patient's body, and ensuring a safe environment for patients undergoing invasive procedures or surgery. As a clinical technologist with specialized knowledge, this entry-level position requires vocational or technical education and involves routine tasks under close supervision.
Responsibilities
- Assist in case picking.
- Provide proper maintenance, assembly, handling, and sterilization techniques of specialty instrumentation under supervision.
- Assist with re-stocking of Operating Rooms and common supply areas.
- Assist with setting up operation of complex equipment.
- Complete annual competency and in-service training programs.
- Proactively identify contamination or breaks in aseptic technique and implement corrective actions.
- Label drugs and solutions per policy.
- Perform surgical counts per policy.
- Handle and prepare surgical specimens per policy.
- Actively participate in OR set up and planning.
- Respond to surgical emergencies and follow hospital emergency management plans.
- Operate complex equipment according to FIU and established usage policies.
- Assist surgeon, RN/circulator, Surgical Technologist, and anesthesia provider intraoperatively.
- Perform instrument reprocessing.
- Perform case picking.
- Perform equipment set up.
- Perform room turnover.
- Provide general support of the surgical team and anesthesia.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Enrolled in Surgical Tech program.
- Ability to work within the semi-restricted and restricted environment of the Operating Room and other Perioperative support areas.
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time under hot surgical lights.
- Ability to handle potential muscle strain from lifting patients and heavy equipment.
- Ability to handle potential shocks and burns from cautery units and autoclaves.
- Ability to handle potential cuts from sharp instruments.
- Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals, blood and bodily fluids, extreme noise levels, radiation, lasers, drastic fluctuations in ambient temperature.
- Ability to wear a protective lead apron for extended periods of time.
- Ability to manage exposure to radioactivity, harmful anesthesia gases, and septic infections.
- Requires frequent lifting and positioning of patients, materials, equipment, power tools, instruments, etc.
- Frequent contacts with patients, physicians, and nursing staff in the Operating Room.
Skills
- Basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, microbiology, and pharmacology.
- Basic knowledge of computers, surgical equipment, and infrastructure.
- Basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively interact with staff, patients, physicians, vendors, and other departments within the hospital.
- Demonstrates essential knowledge in all procedures related to their surgical specialty area.
- Sufficient general knowledge to assist in other specialties as needed.
