About the Role
Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company focused on building the Waymo Driver to improve mobility and safety. The Waymo Driver powers their ride-hail service and can be applied to various vehicle platforms.
Responsibilities
- Develop systems to detect issues in the field specific to the Japanese driving environment and across all international markets.
- Hire, mentor, and lead a software engineering team, fostering a culture of ownership, technical excellence, and rapid execution.
- Build systems and tools to monitor the fleet during scaling, including new software rollouts, geos, and platforms.
- Partner with Data Science, Onboard Software, Mapping, and other engineering teams to identify bottlenecks and design solutions.
- Lead strategic investments to improve the quality of diagnostic signals, ensuring scalability across geographies and ODDs.
Requirements
- BS or MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
- 5-7+ years of hands-on software development experience building scalable, reliable, and performant systems.
- 1-2+ years of experience managing and mentoring software engineering teams.
- Strong system design capabilities.
- Fluent coding skills in C++, Python, and SQL.
- Proven ability to tackle open-ended technical and system design challenges with a structured approach.
- Growth mindset and eagerness to learn.
- Professional or native-level fluency in both Japanese and English.
