About the Role
This nonexempt position performs a variety of clinical and administrative duties to support patient care and practice operations. Responsibilities may include assisting physicians with patient care, handling clerical tasks, and ensuring the clinic environment is maintained. The role aims to provide information to patients to maximize their benefit from clinical services and may involve specialization in a specific medical department.
Responsibilities
- Checking schedules and organizing patient flow
- Accompanying patients to exam/procedure rooms
- Assisting patients with mobility, dressing, and specimen collection
- Collecting patient history
- Performing screenings per provider guidelines
- Assisting physicians/nurses with procedures
- Charting patient information
- Relaying instructions to patients/families
- Answering calls and providing information
- Sending/receiving patient medical records
- Obtaining lab/X-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information
- Completing forms and requisitions
- Scheduling appointments
- Verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics
- Managing and updating charts
- Setting up instruments and equipment
- Cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment
- Cleaning sterilizer and maintaining records
- Ordering, sorting, and storing supplies
- Restocking exam/procedure rooms
- Respecting and promoting patient rights
- Responding to emergency codes
- Reporting patient or staff issues to supervisor
- Performing medical/surgical asepsis, sterilization, and autoclaving
- Checking vital signs and performing mensurations
- Preparing patients for physical examinations
- Administering medications via various routes, including injections
- Verifying prescriptions with physician's orders
- Assisting with minor surgeries, including tray setup and post-surgical care
- Applying dressings and removing sutures
- Disposing of and monitoring biohazard waste
- Applying therapeutic modalities
- Instructing patients on assistive devices, body mechanics, and home care
- Performing laboratory procedures, including OSHA guidelines and CLIA-waived testing
- Performing capillary punctures and venipunctures
- Handling specimens (urine, throat, vaginal, stool, sputum)
- Performing electrocardiography
- Performing emergency triage and first aid
- Adhering to the MA scope of practice in the laboratory
- Performing other duties as assigned
Requirements
- High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED)
- Medical assistant diploma from an accredited vocational institution or community college course
- Appropriate certificate for specialty department if applicable
- Minimum one year of recent experience in a medical facility as a medical assistant or documented externship
- Current experience with Electrocardiogram (EKG), vital signs, venipuncture, capillary punctures, and injections
- Ability to solve practical problems and interpret instructions
- Thorough knowledge of computer information systems
- Ability to frequently stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear
- Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
