About the Role
The Medical Assistant (MA) provides administrative and clinical support within clinics, requiring strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks efficiently and work both independently and collaboratively. The MA must be flexible and able to cover clerical duties as needed, with specific responsibilities varying by office location and department.
Responsibilities
- Answer incoming phone calls, address patient requests, and schedule appointments.
- Contact patients for no-shows and reschedule appointments.
- Distribute patient records to medical staff and prepare new patient charts.
- Ensure accuracy and availability of medical information for review.
- Process patient referrals and manage patient check-outs and discharges.
- Collect necessary copayments.
- Maintain adequate stock of supplies and ensure an organized work area.
- Schedule patient appointments and medical procedures using the EMR system.
- Obtain surgical and diagnostic insurance authorizations.
- Prepare and clean examination rooms, ensuring necessary supplies are available.
- Dispose of table paper and gowns, and clean contaminated surfaces.
- Greet patients courteously and escort them to the appropriate room.
- Assist patients with personal belongings in the exam room.
- Ensure medications brought by patients are placed in their charts.
- Verify patient history prior to physician consultation.
- Obtain and record patient vital signs in the EMR.
- Record patient room number on the encounter ticket and place it appropriately.
- Assist physicians with office procedures as a second pair of hands (excluding medication administration).
- Collaborate with RNs and LPNs to provide high-quality patient care.
- Clean and sterilize medical equipment and dispose of contaminated supplies.
- Maintain working knowledge of OSHA compliance standards and apply policies and procedures.
- Complete all required training and in-services, including OSHA training and PPD placements.
- Maintain a high level of patient confidentiality.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
- Cross-train as a Patient Service Representative (PSR).
Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Medical Assistant degree from an accredited vocational institution or community college course.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience.
- Phlebotomy certification preferred.
