About the Role

This 12-month fixed-term contract role supports the Developer Experience stream, focusing on building a new platform to enhance the Guardian's engineering team efficiency through improved observability, deployment capabilities, and software development ease. As a server-side engineer, you will work with Scala back-end, databases, and streaming technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Programming primarily in Scala and TypeScript, running in AWS, utilizing the best tool for the problem.
  • Working within a cross-functional, empowered team for rapid iteration and feature release.
  • Collaborating closely with developers within the team and across other product teams.
  • Participating in product and technical decision-making.
  • Sharing expertise to help other developers grow while continuing personal development.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience as a software developer programming in Scala and Typescript, running in AWS.
  • Experience working with Scala back-end and with database and streaming technologies.
  • Experience working in a cross-functional team in an agile environment.
  • Excitement for shaping the future of digital journalism.
  • Curiosity about the organization's overall direction beyond team objectives.
