About the Role

The Mechanic position is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing fleet vehicles, with a specialization in buses. The role focuses on troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues to ensure maximum reliability, functionality, and safety.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance, including tire, battery, light, control, safety equipment, power steering, fluid, and filter changes.
  • Maintain fleet condition through diagnostic testing, repair, and rebuilding of components such as engines, transmissions, brake systems, and electrical/mechanical parts.
  • Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance inspections, including body, HVAC, electrical, steering, suspension, brake, and drivetrain systems.
  • Perform DOT inspections and document results to ensure compliance with N.Y. State DOT regulations.
  • Analyze diagnostic tests.
  • Operate vehicles in compliance with company policies, directives, procedures, and traffic laws.
  • Conduct road tests to ensure safe and reliable vehicle operation, salt roads, and participate in snow removal.
  • Perform on-the-road repairs and road calls.
  • Communicate equipment concerns and observations to supervisors.
  • Utilize hand and power tools for repairs.
  • Maintain and repair shop equipment.
  • Perform all tasks safely to reduce accidents.
  • Interpret and apply knowledge from vehicle service manuals and schematics for repairs.
  • Perform system upgrades, campaigns, and modifications on fleet vehicles.
  • Participate in required safety and educational training.
  • Assist fellow mechanics with repairs.
  • Maintain safety and cleanliness of equipment and workspace.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
  • ASE certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a mechanic preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain an excellent Driver's License; CDL preferred.
  • CDL license required by the 5th month of employment.
  • Knowledge of technical and diagnostic equipment, including computer proficiency.
  • Must possess a complete set of hand tools per the department's tool list.
  • Ability to work any scheduled hours, including dayshift, nightshift, weekends, holidays, floater, and overtime.
  • Ability to operate all mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to document repairs and diagnoses on assigned transit vehicles.
  • Basic understanding of the design, adjustment, overhaul, operation, and maintenance of transmissions, heavy-duty engines, and other fleet components.
  • Ability to read schematics, maintenance manuals, and interpret safety documents.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to climb stairs, reach above shoulder level, walk extended distances, stand, kneel, and sit for undefined periods.
  • Ability to work in environments with dust, fumes, exhaust, various noise levels, temperatures, and indoor/outdoor weather conditions for undefined periods.
  • Ability to read, write, and converse in English.
  • Ability to exercise discretion.
  • Ability to bend and lift up to 50 lbs. without assistance.
  • Ability to push and pull up to 100 lbs. without assistance.
  • Ability to work in extreme heat, cold, and damp environments.
  • Ability to physically and visually inspect equipment and fleet vehicles.
  • Ability to pass a DOT physical examination for Maintenance and 19A for part-time driving.
