About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Bilingual Individual Living Benefits Underwriter (French) to join a high-performing underwriting team. This role is ideal for an underwriter with strong expertise in Critical Illness and Disability Insurance who enjoys making complex underwriting decisions while working in a fast-paced, collaborative, and technology-driven environment. You will be responsible for assessing medical, non-medical, and financial risk, managing a high-volume caseload, and making timely, accurate underwriting decisions within your delegated authority. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced professional looking for the flexibility of a fully remote role while contributing to a national underwriting team.
Responsibilities
- Assess medical, non-medical, and financial risk for individual Critical Illness and Disability Insurance applications.
- Review medical records, attending physician statements, laboratory results, financial statements, tax documentation, and other supporting information.
- Make quality underwriting decisions within delegated authority limits.
- Manage a high-volume caseload of approximately 10–15 cases per day (50–75 cases per week) while maintaining service standards.
- Balance risk management, productivity, and customer experience in all underwriting decisions.
- Conduct audits and quality reviews of underwriting decisions to ensure consistency and adherence to underwriting guidelines.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure efficient case management and timely policy decisions.
- Utilize underwriting systems and digital platforms to manage workflow efficiently.
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience in Individual Living Benefits Underwriting with a focus on Critical Illness and Disability Insurance (Group Insurance experience alone will not be considered).
- Fluency in French and English, with the ability to underwrite cases in French.
- Experience assessing medical, financial, and non-medical risk.
- Previous underwriting authority of approximately: Disability Insurance: Up to $5,000 monthly benefit; Critical Illness: $100,000–$500,000+.
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills with the ability to balance risk and customer experience.
- Experience reviewing medical records, attending physician statements, laboratory results, personal financial statements, and corporate financial statements.
- Experience performing quality assurance or auditing underwriting decisions.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, productivity-driven environment.
- Experience using underwriting systems, queue-based workflows, SharePoint, and other digital underwriting tools.
- Familiarity with the RGA Global Underwriting Manual (GUM) is considered an asset.
- Experience working with Canadian insurance carriers is considered an asset.
- Must be legally authorized to work in Canada.
- Ability to travel to a Canadian office up to twice per year for team meetings if required.
