About the Role

The RN Clinical Charge Nurse is responsible for directing and overseeing the daily activities of the unit on an assigned shift to assure successful safe delivery of care. This role is a caregiver who practices in a clinical environment supported through the WellStar Shared Governance Model, guided by the WellStar Professional Nursing Practice Model and evidence-based practice. The role contributes to excellence in patient care, efficient resource use, and leadership tasks such as staff schedules, unit patient flow, and addressing clinical concerns.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and oversee daily activities of the unit on an assigned shift.
  • Assure successful safe delivery of care.
  • Take modified patient care assignments.
  • Be a proactive member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Ensure patients, families, and significant others receive individualized high quality, safe patient care.
  • Be accountable, responsible, and have authority for the practice of nursing.
  • Demonstrate effective teamwork, delegation, communication, and respect.
  • Contribute to the establishment and maintenance of practices that ensure excellence in patient care.
  • Provide for the efficient use of resources.
  • Undertake leadership tasks such as staff schedules, unit patient flow, and subject matter expertise for clinical concerns.
  • Participate in physician rounding, committee involvement, and survey readiness.
  • Serve as a resource to other areas, learning about operational functionality and hospital/facility awareness.
  • Assist in the growth and development of team members.
  • Build rapport between nurses and physicians.
  • Serve as a role model to others.
  • Uphold the practice of nursing as outlined by the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act.
  • Implement the Scope of Practice and Code of Ethics Standards put forth by the American Nurses Association.
  • Uphold the voice of the patient and system policies and procedures.
  • Support service excellence goals.
  • Utilize advanced clinical expertise to support and promote the delivery of safe, age-appropriate, and culturally aware patient care.
  • Serve as a partner in care.
  • Monitor equipment inventory, location, and utilization.
  • Participate in planning and requesting resources for high-quality care.
  • Assist in acquiring appropriate staffing during unexpected shortages or surges in census.
  • Proactively plan for patient care across the care continuum.
  • Participate in the development of protocols and procedures.
  • Make patient assignments, considering new grads, floats, and patient types.
  • Conduct daily discharge/length of stay reviews.
  • Round with physicians/surgeons.
  • Assign surgery beds in conjunction with the surgery schedule.
  • Consult with Supervisor Nursing Administration on bed flow and availability.
  • Manage assignments for emergency services sections, waiting room, and multiple areas.
  • Round on every patient daily to evaluate quality and appropriateness of care.
  • Perform or provide oversight for the Nursing Process.
  • Provide or provide oversight for relationship-based care delivery.
  • Practice using current clinical practice standards with a focus on safety and quality.
  • Round on patients in a modified method in conjunction with nurses in the Emergency Department setting.
  • Communicate with nurse manager and/or assistant nurse manager any needs or concerns.
  • Coordinate the delivery and documentation of safe quality patient care.
  • Promote interdisciplinary communication and regular interdisciplinary planning/rounds.
  • Complete timely documentation and promote a respectful, inclusive clinical environment.
  • Demonstrate teamwork and collaboration by practicing in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • Promote the recruitment and retention of all healthcare team members.
  • Participate and support performance improvement, research, and research utilization.
  • Initiate and/or lead performance improvement activities.
  • Promote inter/intra-disciplinary processes.
  • Actively support/participate in shared governance at all levels in the system.
  • Ensure patient/family/staff confidentiality and corporate compliance.
  • Complete all required mandatory education and proficiencies.
  • Serve as a preceptor (or mentor) for other professional nurses and staff or students.
  • Model the professional practice of nursing and create a healthy work environment.
  • Promote Evidence Based Practice, nursing research, and performance improvement in nursing.
  • Participate in activities such as value analysis.
  • Uphold all health care system/organizational policies and procedures and clinical competencies.
  • Ensure TJC Patient Safety Goals and WellStar Health Systems safety absolutes.
  • Participate in data collection and pose relevant clinical questions.
  • Consult appropriate experts and use appropriate resources, data, and evidence to address practice questions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Comply with all WellStar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.

  • Licensed, knowledgeable, and uphold the practice of nursing as outlined by the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act.
