About the Role

Colliers Engineering & Design is seeking a Structural Project Engineer for its Structural Engineering team in Austin, TX. The role involves designing structural systems for various building types, ensuring projects meet safety standards and functional requirements. Engineers utilize expertise in steel, timber, reinforced concrete, and masonry. Project Managers oversee project schedules, budgets, and client communication, potentially acting as Project Engineers on smaller projects. The company focuses on enhancing the health, welfare, safety, and comfort of building occupants through cost-effective and sustainable designs, with streamlined coordination across all phases of structural design and construction.

Responsibilities

  • Provide primary point of contact for Principals and design team including Architect and General Contractor.
  • Attend project meetings with Architects and other design professionals, Owners, and Contractors.
  • Manage project schedule, activities, and budget.
  • Work with Structural Director to manage client accounts and maintain continuity of service.
  • Identify scope of work exceedances and notify client, summarizing for Structural Director to create change orders.
  • Communicate with Structural Director upon milestone completion and schedule updates.
  • Invoice work as milestones are completed.
  • Review project time and cost with Structural Director.
  • Review time data attributed to projects with Structural Director for accuracy.
  • Maintain project phases within BQ, including project creation, phase association, and fee verification.
  • Review and maintain un-billed time with Structural Director by contributing all time on projects to an invoice once the phase has been billed.
  • Identify un-billed time, determine appropriate invoice association, or identify added scope and coordinate with Structural Director and client for billing.
  • Maintain Construction Administration billing monthly by reviewing project progress with internal resources.
  • Supervise and manage the work of Project Engineers, Graduate Engineers, and Interns.
  • Develop specific tasks for resource allocation with review and follow-up.
  • Anticipate and provide guidance for unconventional conditions.
  • Coordinate with Production Manager to use internal drawing templates for new projects.
  • Ensure all calculations and details comply with relevant codes (IBC, ASCE-7, ACI, AISC, NDS, AISI, etc.) based on project jurisdiction.
  • Review structural drawings for foundation and framing layout, conformance with Architectural drawings, and inclusion of standard notes and details.
  • Ensure structural drawings meet internal standards before proceeding to engineering.
  • Review drawing packages prepared by Project Engineers and make adjustments to ensure product quality and meet client expectations.
  • Act as Project Engineer as required for internal standards familiarity and for complex or high-risk projects.
  • Edit and compile relevant specification sections addressing structural items.
  • Coordinate with Architect on specification sections and format.
  • Manage all construction administration tasks including submittals, shop drawings, RFIs, and review of testing reports.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience required in building structural design.
  • P.E. required.
  • Possess relevant continuing education courses showing annual career advancement.
  • AutoCAD proficiency required.
  • Possess an intermediate to advanced understanding of structural design software such RISA, RAM, TEKLA, TEDDS, SAFE, PROFIS, etc.
  • A willingness to learn and adapt to new software and client needs.
  • Understanding of steel, concrete, masonry, and wood design principles.
  • Mass timber experience or desire to learn preferred.
  • Knowledge of current building and material design codes and standards such as IBC, ASCE7, AISC360, ACI318, ACI 530 or NDS.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills.
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively on a team.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to read, write and understand English for purposes of comprehending written job-related communications and verbal instructions and interactions.
