About the Role

The Senior Litigation Attorney advances the mission of the Eviction Defense Collaborative by providing high-quality, trauma-informed legal services to tenants facing eviction. This role involves handling complex cases, providing full-scope legal representation, and serving as a leader and mentor to junior staff, fellows, and interns to foster an equitable and collaborative team culture.

Responsibilities

  • Provide full-scope representation to tenants in eviction matters, including preparing pleadings, discovery, and motions.
  • Negotiate with landlords and their attorneys in unlawful detainer actions.
  • Represent tenants at court hearings, settlement conferences, and trials.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the organization and department.
  • Support volunteer attorneys and attorneys at other legal services organizations.
  • Train and supervise the work product of law fellows and law clerks.
  • Conduct training and outreach to non-profit and community-based agencies.
  • Co-counsel on cases staffed by junior personnel.
  • Provide mentorship to law fellows, law clerks, and new staff attorneys.
  • Advise Right to Counsel (RTC) clinic staff and review draft pleadings.
  • Develop training plans and mentorship strategies in collaboration with supervisors.
  • Attend and contribute to weekly program meetings, monthly staff meetings, and supervision meetings.
  • Ensure accurate and timely data entry for program evaluation.
  • Represent the organization at community meetings and events.

Requirements

  • Active membership in good standing with the California Bar.
  • Minimum of four years of litigation experience, preferably in landlord-tenant or housing law.
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local landlord-tenant law.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and mentoring within a legal team.
  • Excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and sound judgment.
  • Experience working directly with a diverse population of clients, including those in crisis.
  • Understanding of systemic barriers faced by clients.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and handle sensitive information appropriately.
  • Knowledge of subsidized housing law (preferred).
  • Experience in housing justice, legal aid, or social services (preferred).
  • Bilingual ability in Cantonese, Mandarin, Spanish, Tagalog, Russian, or other languages (preferred).
