About the Role
The Adoption Specialist serves as the primary point of contact for the public at the Animal Shelter, providing customer service, facilitating animal intake and adoptions, and supporting daily shelter operations to ensure positive outcomes for animals.
Responsibilities
- Provide prompt, courteous, and professional customer service in person, by phone, and via email.
- Staff the front desk and provide information regarding shelter policies, programs, and services.
- Facilitate animal intakes by assessing health and temperament, assigning case numbers, and recording vital statistics.
- Check animals for identification and attempt to locate owners of lost animals.
- Assist citizens with adoptions, including counseling, facilitating meet-and-greets, and completing paperwork.
- Process transactions for adoptions, surrenders, and reclaims and collect associated fees.
- Bathe and prepare animals for adoption.
- Administer vaccines, microchips, and basic medical care as directed.
- Maintain and enforce sanitation and biosecurity procedures.
- Clean and disinfect workspaces, equipment, and animal enclosures.
- Maintain accurate records and update animal information in software and online platforms.
- Assist with behavioral assessments, rescue coordination, and animal transport.
- Respond to inquiries, schedule appointments, and manage follow-up communications.
- Process and record donations.
- Assist with surgery pick-ups and provide post-surgery information.
- Maintain inventory and stock supplies.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must have or be able to obtain pre-exposure rabies vaccinations within six months of hire.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
Skills
- Knowledge of animal shelter procedures and humane animal handling.
- Knowledge of sanitation, safety, and biosecurity practices.
- Ability to safely handle animals with unknown health or temperament.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with computers, multi-line phone systems, and cash registers.
- Ability to operate animal handling equipment such as control poles, nets, and traps.

Experience Level
- Experience working with animals in a shelter or veterinary clinic is preferred.
- Customer service experience in a public-facing role is preferred.
