About the Role
Safe Passage Project is seeking a Temporary Supervising Attorney to join a team of public interest attorneys dedicated to assisting immigrant children. This role will involve supervising legal staff and directly representing minors in immigration proceedings, as well as mentoring pro bono attorneys.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and manage a team of attorneys and a paralegal representing minors in removal proceedings before the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR), Asylum Office, USCIS, and Family Courts
- Directly represent minors and mentor pro bono attorneys representing minors in similar proceedings
- Collaborate with legal management in the analysis and creation of legal strategies
- Supervise and provide detailed reporting statistics on each case supervised, mentored, and represented directly
- Prepare trainings and materials to present at Safe Passage Project trainings
Requirements
- J.D. degree and admission to a state bar (required); admission to the New York State Bar (preferred)
- Four (4) or more years of immigration law experience
- Experience managing volunteer engagement; working with law firm volunteers is a plus
- Strong database and computer skills (experience with Salesforce preferred)
- Demonstrated experience maintaining multifaceted relationships with various stakeholders
- Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Exceptional organizational, time management, and record-keeping skills
- A high level of discretion in handling confidential information
- Proven adaptability and flexibility in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, with proactive problem-solving skills
- A spirit for collaboration and an understanding of how to work with vulnerable populations using trauma-centered practices or willingness to learn and incorporate such practices in your work
- A demonstrated ability to understand, communicate with, and effectively interact with people across cultures, as well as sensitivity to and knowledge of the various dimensions of diversity, including gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, age, disability, and socioeconomic status
- A commitment to the work of Safe Passage Project and a readiness to grow and learn with the Safe Passage Project team
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship for a work visa or permit
