About the Role

In-House Counsel will provide legal advice and develop strategies to drive Casualty and Accident Benefit files to timely resolution, working with claims adjusters, clients, and the Legal Team. This role involves end-to-end file handling, including discovery, research, mediations, trials, and arbitrations, while identifying opportunities for technical excellence.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal advice and insight.
• Carry a caseload of 50+ files of a complexity commensurate with years of experience.
• Handle files end-to-end, including examinations for discovery, reporting, mediations, motions, arbitrations, trials, and appeals.
• Follow and meet defined litigation protocols and key results.
• Drive timely and efficient outcomes.
• Ensure legal compliance by following national, provincial, and municipal laws/by-laws, regulations, and internal control requirements.
• Ensure quality writing for each file.
• Advise and educate clients on Ontario’s legal litigation landscape.
• Provide proactive insights and legal guidance by identifying opportunities for technical excellence.
• Develop and deliver targeted training to the organization.
• Contribute to the team effort by accomplishing results and participating in projects as needed.
• Foster positive working relationships with support staff.
• Appropriately direct support staff regarding tasks for file management.

Requirements

• Undergraduate degree, J.D. or LL.B. and called to the bar in Ontario.
• Minimum of 3-8 years of litigation experience.
• Experience handling claims disputes through litigation, mediation, and trials (contested motions and arbitrations, arbitrations, trials, and appeals).
• Legal research skills and proficiency with digital legal research resources.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent judgment.
• Ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
