About the Role

Under the supervision of the Animal Management & Welfare Field Supervisor or Animal Management Field Manager, learns to perform duties of an Animal Control Officer. This includes enforcing animal control through apprehension and impounding of stray, diseased, and/or dangerous animals, assisting with animal loading/unloading, and sanitizing facilities and equipment. The role involves patrolling, responding to citizen complaints, investigating animal bites and cruelty cases, issuing citations, and appearing in court as a witness.

Responsibilities

Investigates bite incidents, cruelty cases, welfare cases, and complaints related to animals.
Traps and relocates wild animals.
Observes areas of alleged violations and interviews witnesses.
Impounds animals running at large or in violation of ordinances.
Patrols and responds to citizen complaints.
Sanitizes vehicles, cages, tools, and equipment.
Issues written citations to violators.
Maintains detailed records of daily activities.
Assists in the reclaim and adoption of animals.
Assists in the care and feeding of animals.
Prepares rabies specimens for laboratory testing.
Assists citizens and agencies in animal management.
Educates residents on animal management and care laws.
Performs minor repairs to equipment.
Rescues animals in danger or distress.
Gathers evidence for court cases and appears in court.
Performs euthanasia as required.
Maintains extensive contact with various animal species.
Monitors animal activity and health, detecting signs of disease.
Collects evidence for search and seizure warrants.
Serves warrants and processes paperwork through the court.
Maintains and logs classified drugs used for euthanasia and tranquilization.
Prepares reports on bite investigations and welfare.
Prepares written reports on the use of oleoresin capsicum.
Restrains, handles, and transports livestock.
Assists fellow staff to accomplish required tasks.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Must live within 10 miles of Amarillo.
Ability to safely handle animals, including those with unknown health and temperament.
Ability to safely operate a staff or pole, ropes, nets, and camera.
Ability to operate a half-ton truck with mobile radio, euthanasia equipment, and a livestock trailer.
Knowledge to safely administer sodium pentobarbital, Ketaset, and Oleoresin Capsicum.
Ability to make decisions during emergency and unusual circumstances.
Skill in using standard office equipment, computers, and related software.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Must be a Basic Certified Animal Control Officer.
Must complete a 3-semester hour course of Police Community Relations within 12 months of appointment.
Must obtain rabies pre-exposure vaccinations within 12 months of employment.
High school diploma or GED required.
Valid Texas driver's license required.
