About the Role
The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education is seeking to fill a Principal position to foster a caring, dynamic, and creative environment that provides educational opportunities and promotes a love of learning. The role is responsible for the administration of the public school system, supporting approximately 12,000 students in 38 schools. The Centre for Education is committed to being a diverse workforce representative of the students it serves.
Responsibilities
- Ensure the public school program and curricula are implemented.
- Keep attendance records for every student and report to the regional executive director.
- Take all reasonable steps to secure full and regular attendance at school.
- Communicate regularly with parents of students.
- Ensure reasonable steps are taken to create and maintain a safe, orderly, positive, and effective learning environment.
- Investigate and respond to reports of unacceptable student behavior and notify parents if a student's well-being is endangered.
- Ensure Provincial and regional centre policies are followed.
- Identify the staffing needs of the school.
- Assist the regional executive director with the selection and hiring of school staff.
- Evaluate the performance of teachers and other school staff.
- Discipline teachers and other school staff in accordance with regional centre policies.
- Assist the regional centre in the development and implementation of professional-development programs.
- Encourage participation in school decision-making through school advisory councils and committees.
- Participate in the establishment and operation of a school advisory council.
- Assist in the development of school improvement plans and coordinate their implementation.
- Account to the regional executive director for money received.
- Account to the Minister, through the regional executive director, for the school's performance.
- Cooperate with staff of other departments to better meet student needs.
- Champion the implementation of regional or departmental initiatives as the key change agent for the school.
- Encourage teachers to use a variety of techniques and teaching strategies to be culturally responsive to students’ needs.
- Ensure that staff schedules and assignments reflect qualifications, applicable collective agreements, and provincial/regional policies and procedures.
- Be responsible for the assessment program carried on in school and for the evaluation of student progress.
- Enforce Section 27 of the Education Act regarding the suspension of students.
- Be responsible for appointing a substitute from the approved list in cases of staff absence.
- Be responsible for supervision of the physical plant and school facilities and ensure they are maintained in acceptable condition.
- Maintain ongoing compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act at the school site.
- Attend all meetings called by the Regional Executive Director of Education.
- Inform a supervisor when absent from duties.
Requirements

- A valid Nova Scotia teacher's license.
- A minimum of five (5) years successful teaching experience in a public school is required.
- Proven leadership abilities and organizational, interpersonal and decision-making skills.
- Motivation, knowledge and ability to use applicable technology in developing a balanced approach between the teaching, learning and administrative functions within the school.
- Well developed decision-making and creative problem solving ability.
- Superior skills in strategic planning and implementation of instructional programs.
- Knowledge of, and commitment to, quality inclusive education for all students.
- Superior ability to stimulate professional growth of staff, through effective professional development programs.
- Demonstrated commitment to and above average knowledge and abilities in the areas of curriculum and curriculum development, implementation and evaluation.
- Superior skills in facilities management, record keeping, financial management and in the supervision of teaching and other staff.
- Demonstrated ability to discharge the duties of a principal as set out in Section 38 of the Education Act.

Experience Level
