About the Role

Wellcome Collection is a free museum and library exploring the past, present, and future of health. We are seeking a Head of Information, Research and Culturally Sensitive Collections to lead a team responsible for collections management, equitable research programs, and approaches to culturally sensitive collections, including restitution and repatriation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead team managers to ensure strategic alignment with Wellcome Collection’s vision and mission.
  • Embed Wellcome Collection’s Strategic Plan across Collections Information, Research, and Culturally Sensitive Collections.
  • Provide leadership and advocacy for expert teams delivering research and sensitive collections work, and Collections Information practice.
  • Design and implement a new research strategy.
  • Establish an internal research network.
  • Foster an environment for innovative and progressive collections information and sensitive collections practice.
  • Increase visibility and accountability for collections information and research practice.
  • Develop data-informed diversification of research communities.
  • Lead implementation of improvement actions from Archive Service Accreditation and similar strategic ambitions.
  • Approach collections information, research, and sensitive collections work from a human-centred perspective, prioritizing audiences, communities, and stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Exceptional leader with experience in developing and managing significant, multi-format collections and research programs within archives, libraries, or museums.
  • Proven experience in managing uncertainty, change, and sensitive issues, achieving positive outcomes with high probity and integrity.
  • Ability to communicate to and influence a range of audiences, including executive and non-executive board members, and stakeholders across arts, cultural, and research sectors.
  • Personal commitment to equitable practice across access, diversity, and inclusion, and understanding of how to embed these commitments into collections services.
  • Demonstrable experience of managing culturally sensitive research and collections work that resulted in positive outcomes for communities of origin.
  • Demonstrable experience of influencing senior stakeholders, including executive and non-executive board members, and national or international policy bodies on archival and/or research issues that have resulted in strategic changes at a sector level.
  • Appropriate management experience in an archive, library, or museum with responsibility for developing and managing significant, multi-format collections and research programs.
  • Strong understanding of the need for coherent digital services and the vital role digital plays in driving increased accessibility.
  • Demonstrable experience of providing leadership and strategic impact in collections returns work, including restitution, repatriation, and knowledge exchange with communities of origin, and the legal and ethical frameworks governing this work.
