About the Role
Teacher Apprentices will observe and learn from classroom teachers, co-teach, support with tutoring and grading, and provide substitute coverage. This role offers opportunities for direct teaching experience, enrichment classes, student event coordination, and mentoring. Participants will gain experience through professional development and coaching, with the goal of becoming a full-time teacher within 1-2 years.
Responsibilities
- Teach classes on behalf of Deans and teacher-leaders who are observing other teachers
- Provide substitute teaching coverage for teachers within the school
- Teach one class or small groups of students
- Periodically plan and deliver instruction, gradually taking on more responsibility throughout the year
- Develop teaching skills to potentially become a full-time teacher at the school
- Support students by providing one-on-one and small group tutoring daily, and small group intervention and student support
- Observe teachers in order to improve instructional techniques and classroom management
- Meet regularly with a coach to implement feedback on lessons and instruction
- Teach or help coordinate an elective class
- Build effective relationships amongst teachers, parents, and the community to improve school culture
- Foster a school climate that supports the school’s mission statement; promotes respect and appreciation for all students, staff and parents
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in specific subject matter or education preferred
- Enrollment in a Bachelors program with a major or minor in Education with a minimum of 60 credits is required
- Some teaching or tutoring experience is preferred
- Experience supporting teachers through coaching or directing
- Experience working with students with diverse backgrounds and needs
- Experience and general understanding of educational administration
