About the Role
This role is responsible for managing the Financial Accounting team, ensuring the delivery of accurate financial reporting, a robust control environment, and compliance with UK GAAP, IFRS, and company policies. The role acts as the key technical accounting expert for the business, partnering with various teams and serving as a trusted contact for Group Finance, auditors, and regulatory bodies.
Responsibilities
- Lead, develop, and motivate a team of Financial Accountants.
- Manage workload prioritization, resource planning, and performance management.
- Establish and deliver individual development plans and coach team members.
- Ensure appropriate succession planning and capability development.
- Promote best-practice financial control, governance, and compliance standards.
- Own month-end and year-end financial close processes.
- Review and approve accounting entries, accruals, provisions, and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Provide technical accounting expertise and guidance on IFRS, UK GAAP (FRS102), and Group accounting policies.
- Lead the assessment, implementation, and communication of new accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
- Review and challenge balance sheet forecasts and planning assumptions.
- Partner with the Tax Manager to ensure accounting structures and reporting processes support tax compliance.
- Maintain and continuously enhance the financial control framework.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate financial reporting and compliance risks.
- Drive process improvements, standardization, and automation initiatives.
- Lead control assessments and support remediation activities.
- Champion the application of technology, automation, and data analytics within Finance.
- Act as a trusted advisor to Finance, Operations, Sales, and Marketing teams.
- Support business initiatives by providing accounting guidance and evaluating reporting impacts.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders to strengthen financial awareness and control ownership.
- Partner with wider Group Finance to ensure alignment with global reporting requirements.
- Lead or support strategic projects, organizational changes, and finance transformation initiatives.
- Lead all aspects of the external audit process.
- Oversee the preparation, review, and submission of statutory financial statements.
- Ensure compliance with Companies House, HMRC, and other regulatory reporting obligations.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with external auditors, regulatory bodies, and Group Finance stakeholders.
- Deliver accurate month-end, quarter-end, and year-end reporting.
- Ensure all statutory reporting obligations are completed accurately and on time.
- Maintain full compliance with IFRS, UK GAAP, and Group accounting policies.
- Deliver clean external audit opinions with minimal audit adjustments.
- Ensure all internal and external audit requests are completed within agreed timelines.
- Maintain a robust financial control environment.
- Successfully implement new accounting standards and regulatory changes.
- Provide timely technical accounting guidance.
- Ensure consistency and quality of accounting treatment across all entities.
- Lead the delivery of accurate balance sheet planning, forecasting, and Latest Estimate submissions.
- Improve forecast accuracy and balance sheet transparency.
- Support business stakeholders in achieving strategic and operational objectives.
- Develop and retain a high-performing finance team.
- Ensure all direct reports have documented development plans, regular performance reviews, and clear succession planning.
- Deliver agreed process improvement and automation initiatives.
- Improve efficiency, quality, and standardization across accounting processes.
Requirements
- Fully qualified ACA or ACCA accountant.
- Proven post-qualification experience in external audit, financial reporting, or financial accounting roles.
- Previous experience managing, coaching, and developing finance professionals.
- Strong experience managing external audits and statutory reporting requirements.
- Experience implementing process improvements, controls enhancements, or finance transformation initiatives is advantageous.
- Strong technical knowledge of IFRS and UK GAAP (FRS102).
- Advanced user of Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Experience with SAP is preferred but not essential.
- Experience using Caseware or other statutory accounts and audit-support software.
- Experience leveraging automation, data analytics, and reporting tools (e.g., Power Query, Power BI, Python, similar) is preferred but not essential.
