About the Role
As a Senior RF Engineer supporting the HS2 project, you will be responsible for the design, deployment, and optimization of wireless mobile solutions. You will work within a multi-discipline design team to create solutions meeting customer needs, specifically leading the cellular RF design for trackside macro cell sites.
Responsibilities
- Carry out RF and Design Surveys for tunnel radiating infrastructure.
- Perform RF modelling, link budgets, and design using industry-standard methods and tools.
- Work with station RF design engineers to create 3D design models of tunnel evacuation shafts and portal buildings.
- Collaborate with outdoor RF design engineers to coordinate handovers between tunnel and open route environments.
- Act as RF design expert in engineering discussions to address challenges unique to high-speed rail and tunnel environments.
- Ensure suitability of installation in the tunnel environment considering space, heat, vibration, dust, etc.
- Ensure compliance with RF safety best practices and guidelines such as ICNIRP.
- Lead product and component selection to minimize system losses and ensure system quality, minimizing factors like PIM.
- Review results, drawings, and reports conducted by others.
- Lead optimization activities to manage interference and maximize system performance.
- Perform design criteria/requirements, system dimensioning, link budget, and traffic analysis.
- Create low-level designs including Bills of Materials, cable schedules, and detailed system configuration diagrams, controlling costs.
- Understand the wider design context and ensure external interfaces are considered, working with team members for integrated design.
- Ensure designs are dimensioned for current demand and scalable for future growth and MNO requirement changes.
- Participate in equipment coordination sessions with HS2 stakeholders and partners.
- Participate in MNO review sessions, presenting the design and justifying technical decisions.
- Complete RAMS and abide by company H&S policy.
- Work with project managers and coordinators to deliver projects on time and on budget.
- Liaise with customers, presenting designs to clients, stakeholders, and project teams.
- Complete Handover Packs, Post Integration Reports, and Design Reports within agreed timescales and templates.
- Provide estimates on resources required for tasks.
- Update internal reporting systems as required.
- Familiarize with all company documentation, especially ISO procedures.
Requirements
- Experience in RF planning, designing, and optimizing tunnel coverage solutions within the rail industry.
- Knowledge of UK or IE mobile network architecture models and standards.
- Experience with testing methodologies and test tools such as scanners and test phones (TEMS, NEMO).
- Experience designing DAS equipment rooms, including MNO equipment requirements, dimensioning DAS head end, and defining electrical and cooling loads.
- Knowledge of working with architects & BIM modeling teams for spatial coordination of equipment.
- Advanced knowledge in optimization and performance optimization.
- Advanced knowledge of 3GPP standards, especially relating to high-speed rail scenarios and their impact on RAN performance.
- Advanced knowledge of radio propagation models, fade margins, and other environmental factors impacting RF coverage.
- Good knowledge of Radio Link Budgets.
