About the Role

This Staff-level frontend engineering role involves architecting and shipping the front-end systems for an operating system for science. You will play a direct role in shaping interaction design, usability, and product quality, collaborating closely with the team to define the user experience of complex scientific workflows. You will set technical direction for the front end, including component architecture, the design system, and state management patterns, while ensuring design quality meets production code.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and ship the front end, leading component architecture, the design system, and shared front-end infrastructure.
  • Write reusable, well-tested code that holds up as the team and product grow.
  • Set front-end technical direction, driving decisions on state management, rendering strategy, and performance budgets.
  • Write RFCs and reviews to align the team on technical direction.
  • Turn ambiguous product intent into concrete UI direction by synthesizing input from various stakeholders.
  • Define the UX patterns the platform runs on, shaping patterns for navigation, data display, and complex multi-step flows.
  • Make user flows coherent end to end, ensuring context carries through each step and the next action is obvious.
  • Prototype and build production UI for complex scientific workflows, including pipelines, simulations, and data dashboards.
  • Work directly with complex scientific and technical data to make dense workflows, structured results, and visualizations understandable and actionable.
  • Integrate the front end with backend APIs and distributed platform services.
  • Keep the product reliable and fast across browsers, devices, and environments.
  • Treat performance and accessibility as engineering work, setting expectations, chasing bottlenecks, and improving accessibility.
  • Find and fix UX debt by improving screens, flows, and inconsistencies.
  • Set and evolve frontend engineering standards for automated testing, code review, and component quality.
  • Raise the team’s product and frontend craft through pairing, code reviews, and sharing patterns.
  • Make pragmatic product and interaction decisions using strong judgment on layout, hierarchy, and interaction design.
  • Frame options and drive alignment with Product, Engineering, Science, and leadership on tradeoffs.

Requirements

  • 7+ years building production web applications.
  • Deep command of React, TypeScript, JavaScript, CSS, and HTML.
  • Track record of owning front-end architecture from design through ship.
  • Proven technical leadership, including setting front-end standards and making architecture decisions.
  • Strong design instincts and spatial sense.
  • Experience with data-heavy, workflow-heavy, or tool-heavy products (e.g., scientific software, developer tools, analytics platforms).
  • Comfort with ambiguity and ability to operate in an early, fast-moving company.
  • Product thinking at the interaction level.
  • Solid front-end fundamentals at scale, including state management, responsive and cross-browser work, testing, performance profiling, and version control.
  • Comfort with data visualization where the visualization is the interface.
  • A portfolio or body of work that shows craft, ideally with code.
  • High agency: ability to pull context, identify missing decisions, propose paths forward, and create momentum.
  • Ownership: caring about the full path from product intent to production behavior.
  • Clear communicator, able to work well with both technical and non-technical people.
  • Pragmatism: optimizing for impact and knowing when to prototype, systematize, pay down debt, or move quickly.
  • Bias toward working software: using prototypes, preview environments, and production code to make discussions concrete.
