About the Role

The Technical Manager is responsible for ensuring that all workers’ compensation claim decisions are fair, evidence-based, and appropriate to the specific circumstances of each case, while aligning with the relevant state legislative and regulatory requirements. This role provides specialist advice and guidance to Case Managers on the interpretation and application of workers’ compensation legislation, regulations, and internal policies, ensuring claims are managed consistently, efficiently, and in full compliance with statutory obligations. The role plays a critical part in determining ongoing entitlement decisions and contributes to improved return-to-work outcomes for injured team members, supporting regulatory compliance and effective management of claim-related costs.

Responsibilities

  • Understand all self-insurance, and business requirements for effective case management within the Woolworths account.
  • Provide expert technical support to Case Managers to ensure accurate and timely claim decisions in line with legislative and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with challenging cases by offering insights on legal implications and potential resolutions.
  • Clarify complex legal language to help case managers understand how it applies to specific claims.
  • Promote consistency and quality in claims decision-making through regular case reviews and oversight of key entitlement determinations.
  • Operate within designated claims approval limits and consistently meet performance targets.
  • Maintain comprehensive, accurate documentation to support decision-making and audit compliance.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to phone calls and queries from injured team members, managers, and other stakeholders, ensuring high-quality customer service.
  • Foster a customer-focused approach in all aspects of claims management, ensuring injured team members and employers are treated with empathy, respect, and transparency.
  • Provide advice to Case Managers on managing challenging stakeholder interactions and maintaining clear, professional communication.
  • Assist in the resolution of escalated queries, complaints, and disputes, ensuring timely and appropriate outcomes.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all applicable workers’ compensation legislation, self-insurance requirements, and organisational policies.
  • Maintain accurate claims data, documentation and up-to-date file notes by consistently recording all relevant information in Assure to support decisions and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislative and regulatory changes and ensure this is communicated effectively within the team.
  • Identify potential risks within claims and collaborate on mitigation strategies.
  • Contribute to a positive, supportive team environment that encourages open communication, shared learning, and collective accountability.
  • Share expertise by providing training and coaching to case managers to ensure they are well-versed in current laws and best practice in claims management, customer service and compliance.
  • Review and quality-check claims documentation prepared by Case Managers, offering constructive feedback to improve compliance and claim outcomes.
  • Participate actively in team meetings, training, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in workers' compensation case management, preferably in a self-insured environment.
  • Previous experience in technical role supporting claims management teams.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex claims and interpreting relevant legislation and regulatory frameworks.
