About the Role
The Bus Driver is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient transportation of students, staff, and school-related materials. This role ensures a high standard of student safety and wellbeing through professional vehicle operation and adherence to regulations. The Bus Driver acts as a positive representative of the school, demonstrating professionalism and integrity.
Responsibilities
- Safely transport students and staff on daily school routes, excursions, events, and other scheduled activities, including occasional evening and weekend work.
- Ensure the safety, wellbeing, and appropriate supervision of students while in transit, maintaining duty of care, behaviour management, and child safeguarding requirements.
- Conduct daily vehicle inspections and basic maintenance, including monitoring fuel, oil, water levels, and tyre pressures, and reporting mechanical issues promptly.
- Maintain the bus in a clean, safe, and presentable condition through regular interior and exterior cleaning and upkeep.
- Coordinate and monitor vehicle registrations, inspections, and servicing to ensure compliance and minimise operational disruption.
- Transport school equipment, materials, and correspondence between campuses and other locations as required.
- Comply with all road transport legislation, NSW driving regulations, school policies, and workplace safety requirements, including the use of PPE where necessary.
- Uphold professional standards through effective communication, confidentiality, accountability, appropriate professional boundaries with students and families, and timely reporting of incidents, delays, or emergencies.
Requirements
- Demonstrated safe and competent bus driving skills, with a strong understanding of road safety principles and defensive driving practices.
- Sound knowledge of NSW road rules, transport legislation, vehicle compliance requirements, and fatigue management obligations.
- Proven ability to conduct daily vehicle inspections, basic maintenance checks, and timely reporting of repairs or safety concerns.
- Strong organisational and time management skills, including coordinating schedules, servicing, registrations, and compliance requirements.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with students, parents, staff, and school leadership.
- Ability to remain calm and act appropriately during emergencies, incidents, traffic disruptions, or other unexpected situations.
- Understanding of child safeguarding, student supervision, and duty of care responsibilities, including maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
- Previous experience driving buses, coaches, or passenger transport vehicles, with experience in a school environment or transporting children highly regarded.
- Holds a current NSW Heavy Rigid (HR) Driver Licence.
- Holds a current Bus Driver Authority (BDA).
- Demonstrated safe driving record that meets Transport for NSW requirements.
