About the Role
Provide senior technical leadership over the organization's tax function, overseeing tax compliance, planning, and review processes. This role ensures the accuracy and timeliness of all tax filings, manages complex client and organizational tax matters, and builds scalable processes to support a growing client base. The position also includes mentoring and developing staff accountants and preparers, and serving as the primary point of technical escalation for tax-related questions. This is a newly created position established to support continued growth in client volume and workload.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the preparation and review of federal, state, and local tax returns for individuals, businesses, and/or trusts.
- Develop and implement tax planning strategies to minimize liability and ensure compliance with current tax law.
- Review complex tax returns and supporting workpapers prepared by staff for accuracy and completeness.
- Research and interpret tax regulations, rulings, and legislative changes; advise leadership and clients on implications.
- Manage IRS and state tax authority notices, audits, and correspondence.
- Oversee tax provision and compliance calendars, ensuring all deadlines are met.
- Build and refine internal tax processes, workflows, and quality-control procedures to support scalability.
- Supervise, train, and mentor tax staff; provide technical guidance and performance feedback.
- Collaborate with accounting/audit teams on year-end close, financial statement tax provisions, and related disclosures.
- Serve as a key point of contact for clients on tax matters, providing clear, timely communication.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and technology adoption within the tax function.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of tax code changes and ensure firm-wide compliance.
Requirements
- Active CPA license
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 7+ years of progressive tax experience, including experience reviewing and managing complex returns
- Strong experience/background preparing 1065, 1120-S, 1120, 1041, 990
- Strong experience in tax planning and advisory services
- Experience with international taxation
- Strong knowledge of federal and state tax codes, regulations, and filing requirements
- Prior experience supervising or mentoring staff
- Proficiency with tax preparation and research software (e.g., CCH Axcess, ProSystem fx, UltraTax, or similar)
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple engagements and deadlines simultaneously, particularly during peak tax season
- Master's degree in Taxation (MST) or related advanced credential (Preferred)
- Experience in public accounting or a multi-client environment (Preferred)
