About the Role

This role involves setting and controlling Blackbird's media and communications agenda, determining when and how the firm is represented in the press. It's an individual contributor position focused on driving outputs with a budget for accelerating outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Set the firm's media posture, deciding how Blackbird appears in the press and when to respond.
  • Determine what stories are worth telling, focusing on coverage that builds the firm rather than just filling a clipping file.
  • Build a distinctive and credible presence in Australasia and North America across relevant media channels.
  • Develop relationships with journalists and key voices in the industry.
  • Use reputation as a tool to accelerate the success of Blackbird and its portfolio companies.
  • Manage external crisis advisors and external communications during reputation threats.

Requirements

  • Sound working knowledge of investment management, preferably in venture capital or private equity.
  • Ability to distinguish between attention that builds a firm and attention that merely flatters it.
  • Understanding of how the press works, with existing relationships and the credibility to extend them.
  • Capacity to advise senior individuals, push back on approaches, and hold ground under pressure.
  • Ability to engage effectively with founders, operators, journalists, and partners.
  • Willingness to get hands-on in a small team environment.
  • Proficiency in using AI to enhance thinking and work, understanding its limitations.
  • Experience experimenting with new formats and using data to inform decisions.
