About the Role

Creature Technical Directors design and build animation setups and systems, partnering with Modelers, Animators, Designers, and Engineers to bring characters to life.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build and test advanced animation rigs, setups, systems and workflows for characters, creatures, vehicles and props using Maya, Unreal and ILM's proprietary toolsets.
  • Assist in development and maintenance of systems and workflows for animating and rigging characters to expedite the character setup and animation process.
  • Write scripts to facilitate art production when required.
  • Stay up-to-date on industry-standard tools and systems (Unreal Engine, Maya, etc.) and explore new techniques for skeletons, facial animation methodologies, and constraints.
  • Develop familiarity with proprietary toolsets and workflows in the ILM pipeline, integrating with best practices for real-time production workflow.
  • Adapt and evolve solutions to problems within a hybrid framework.
  • Consult in the development of breakdowns, task lists, estimates, schedules, milestones, and overall project goals.
  • Participate in project stand-ups, meetings, and reviews.
  • Actively participate in concept testing of new ideas and building of rapid prototypes.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience as a Character TD, Technical Artist-Rigger, or Technical Animator in AAA game development.
  • 2+ years of production experience with Maya and Maya API.
  • Excellent working knowledge of scripting: Maya Python/PyMEL, C++ API, and PySide/PyQt GUI design experience.
  • Knowledgeable of the real-time art production pipeline and process for different asset types, including potential pitfalls and risks with movement mechanics and deformation.
  • Strong grasp of basic animation principles, anatomy, kinematics, and deformation.
  • Extensive experience integrating performance capture animation for both body and face.
  • Experience with run-time, blend-tree based animation systems.
  • Portfolio/reel submission with a detailed breakdown of work is required.
