About the Role

We're hiring an Engineering Manager who reports to the VP of Engineering. You'll own people leadership for a group of our engineers: their growth, performance, well-being, and talent bar. You’ll be implementing and shaping our engineering growth culture. This is a player-coach role where you are a strong engineer and can stay close to technical work.

Responsibilities

  • Own growth, performance, 1:1s, and the talent bar for a team of engineers (software, ML, and infrastructure).
  • Own outcomes end to end, collaborating with PM, design, CS, and sales.
  • Unblock people day in and day out on product, technology, and individual growth.
  • Coach individuals to foster self-improving paths.
  • Set clarity and context for the team.
  • Identify systemic causes of underperformance.
  • Sustain urgency without burnout.
  • Lead an AI-native team, decomposing ambiguous goals into AI-executable work.
  • Innovate on the craft of management and build a repeatable way of managing.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in engineering, including 2+ as a manager and 5+ years as an IC engineer.
  • Managed people who visibly grew, levelled up, got promoted, or went on to lead.
  • Experience building or reshaping team rituals, tooling, culture, or process to solve business problems.
  • Player-coach experience at a startup or scale-up, scaling a small, high-output team while staying close to the work.
  • Technical depth across the stack.
  • Ability to drop into technical work when necessary.
  • Reason from first principles, judiciously using best practices, frameworks, or playbooks.
  • Ability to take and deliver hard feedback with radical candor and care.
  • Experience in a regulated industry (healthcare, finance, or similar) is an asset.
  • Enjoy the art of delegation.
  • Have a framework for coaching people.
  • Think in sociotechnical systems.
  • Prefer changing team culture over implementing more processes.
  • Comfortable in a ~40-person company that ships daily.
