About the Role

This is a newly created senior technical leadership role within our Commercial Property, Construction and Engineering Claims team. We are seeking an accomplished commercial claims professional with deep expertise in complex property claims in a specialist of general insurer environment. Candidates with a legal background, particularly in first party commercial property claims are also strongly encouraged to apply. This is an opportunity for an experienced commercial claims or legal professional to shape technical standards, develop future capability and have a meaningful impact on complex claims outcomes across a national portfolio. As our national Technical Claims Manager, you will play a critical role in strengthening technical and operational capability across the team, providing expert support, coaching and guidance to Team Leaders and our technical roles across all our property portfolios and particularly our complex and high-value claims portfolios. This role is central to ensuring best practice claims management, technical consistency and strong governance across large and complex claims. You will act as a trusted technical authority, driving continuous improvement, lifting technical standards, and supporting the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective outcomes that meet customer, community and commercial expectations. A key focus will be the establishment of structured technical mentoring and on-the-job learning programs that uplift technical decision-making, strengthen claim quality and support sustained team performance.

Responsibilities

  • Establish structured methods, procedures and on-the-job learning programs to coach and mentor Technical Specialists, supporting Service Managers in delivering cost-effective claims outcomes while meeting customer and community expectations.
  • Set technical standards and operational protocols aligned to business plans to ensure objectives are met.
  • Provide senior technical oversight and act as a critical point of escalation on complex, denied, litigated or pending claims.
  • Apply expert commercial judgement to policy interpretation, coverage analysis, liability assessment, quantum, claim strategy and dispute resolution.
  • Identify, analyse, recommend and implement process improvements within functional claims areas.
  • Achieve specific key performance indicators and continually find better ways to improve overall service delivery.
  • Cultivate positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders to accomplish organisational goals.
  • Assess present and future capability needs, providing technical leadership, mentoring and guidance to sustain a high-performing workforce.

Requirements

  • Proven experience and credibility as a senior technical claims professional, commercial claims leader or legally qualified practitioner with substantial exposure to complex commercial claims.
  • Extensive experience managing large loss and highly complex first party commercial property and/or commercial claims matters.
  • Demonstrated expertise in policy interpretation, coverage determination, liability assessment, quantum, claim strategy, dispute resolution and governance frameworks.
  • A proven track record operating as a senior technical authority within claims, legal practice, insurance litigation or complex claims environment.
  • Strong capability in negotiating and settling significant and high-value property claims, balancing technical accuracy, commercial judgement and customer and regulatory outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to support design and implement structured technical coaching, mentoring or capability development programs that improve technical decision-making and team performance.
  • The confidence, judgement and gravitas to influence senior stakeholders, drive continuous improvement and reinforce confidence in claims capability.
  • Relevant legal qualifications or a legal background in insurance, property, construction or commercial litigation will be highly regarded.
