About the Role
East Side House Settlement, founded in 1891, is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to providing resources and opportunities to the South Bronx community. Its youth education and technology programs aim to foster self-sufficiency and independence through education. The ESH summer programs offer students additional learning time in a fun, engaging, and safe environment with a variety of activities designed to build and reinforce skills needed to meet New York State standards.
Responsibilities
- Identify, create, and facilitate age-appropriate, thematic-based lesson plans and activities.
- Work collaboratively with specialists to support activity implementation.
- Prepare the learning environment by creating a welcoming space that exhibits participant's work.
- Build positive relationships with youth and adults, serving as a role model.
- Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of participants by closely supervising all activities.
- Assist with participant enrollment and submit daily attendance records and other required documents.
- Inspect daily all facilities, equipment, and supplies, ensuring accountability and proper storage.
- Demonstrate commitment to leadership development, community building, and community organizing.
- Organize storage areas and control the use of materials, equipment, and tools.
- Maintain accurate program documentation, including incident/accident/behavior reports and attendance records.
- Understand and communicate the East Side House Settlement mission and Compass program goals.
- Actively participate in professional development, supervision, team meetings, and training.
- Demonstrate key competencies including initiative, teamwork, cooperation, preparedness, professionalism, reliability, and a willingness to improve.
- Organize and participate in external special events to promote the Agency's mission and image.
- Adhere to all ESH policies, practices, and procedures.
- Perform other tasks as directed.
Requirements
- Minimum High School Diploma or GED required.
- Some college preferred.
- Must have experience working with elementary schools, preferably in a racially, ethically, and socioemotionally diverse urban community.
- Minimum of two years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience required.
- Genuine enthusiasm for developing professional skills through training opportunities and field practice.
- Ability to engage and lead activities in your area of specialty.
- Strong communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Excellent judgment.
- Ability to work in a team in various environments.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with all participants while remaining professional at all times.
- Must be able to motivate students while setting an example in all areas, including responsibility, timeliness, organization, attendance, and professionalism.
- Ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
- Department of Health Fingerprint Clearance required.
- Department of Health Medical Clearance required.
- Department of Education Fingerprint Clearance required.
- State Central Registry (SCR) Clearance required ($25.00 fee).
- Staff Exclusion List (SEL) Clearance required.
- Health Statement required.
- Required Online Training: Mandated Reporter, 2 hours.
- Required Online Training: Foundations of Health & Safety Training, 5 hours.
