About the Role

Canada’s Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments (OBSI) is seeking talented investigators interested in public service and contributing to financial fairness and justice. OBSI is a national, independent, and not-for-profit organization that resolves disputes between consumers and financial services firms.

Responsibilities

  • Organize case files appropriately.
  • Review documentation provided by consumers and participating firms.
  • Determine relevant issues and develop investigation plans.
  • Identify and collect additional documentation as required.
  • Conduct interviews with consumers, participating firm staff, and third parties.
  • Conduct necessary research.
  • Analyze all information obtained.
  • Request and review financial analysis and loss calculations.
  • Maintain regular contact with consumers and participating firms.
  • Reach well-reasoned conclusions based on thorough investigations and relevant evidence.
  • Seek assistance from management or colleagues when appropriate.
  • Accurately document reasons and recommended conclusions.
  • Communicate investigation details and approved conclusions.
  • Write clear initial view letters and facilitated settlement proposals.
  • Facilitate settlements between clients and firms.
  • Draft clear and persuasive investigation reports when settlements cannot be reached.
  • Investigate and close cases efficiently and timely.
  • Respond to consumer and/or firm inquiries after a case is closed.
  • Keep informed about industry news, trends, and developments.
  • Help and support colleagues when called upon.
  • Participate in training to improve knowledge and skills.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of OBSI policies and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties and complete special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of the banking and investment industry and products.
  • Strong knowledge of the relevant legal and regulatory environment.
  • Strong knowledge of appropriate industry training.
  • Demonstrated personal commitment to fairness and ethics.
  • Ability to manage moderate to high caseloads.
  • Ability to conduct investigations in both official languages will be considered a strong asset.

Location

  • Candidates residing anywhere in Canada will be considered.
  • Hybrid position based in Toronto for Investigators residing in the Greater Toronto Area.
