About the Role
Assist teachers in providing comprehensive educational and functional training for students, maintaining a clean and orderly learning environment, and supporting student activities such as feeding, field trips, and behavior management.
Responsibilities
- Assist individual students and small groups as directed by the teacher.
- Implement proactive behavior management techniques to prevent escalation.
- Utilize pre-approved behavior management techniques.
- Adhere to individual behavior intervention plans and classroom behavior plans.
- Track behaviors in accordance with Beyond Support Network protocol.
- Support a mutually respectful, safe, and inclusive learning environment.
- Demonstrate knowledge of and responsiveness to social, cultural, linguistic, family, and community factors influencing students.
- Maintain clear expectations for students.
- Provide necessary supports to foster student independence.
- Provide appropriate supervision to students at all times.
- Provide supervision during recreational periods, arrival/departure, field trips, and other activities.
- Promptly report to the classroom at the start and end of the day.
- Provide clear and succinct directions to students.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work environment.
- Provide appropriate physical care for assigned students, including assistance with washing, dressing, and toileting.
- Adhere to established break and lunch times.
- Track student progress on learning goals using a formative assessment approach.
- Communicate with parents only through the teacher or designated staff.
- Foster student independence to the greatest possible level.
- Ensure all communications are professional, appropriate, and respectful.
- Model and demonstrate expected student behavior.
- Follow all directives from the teacher and perform duties as needed.
- Use available technology including whiteboards, computers, and augmentative devices.
- Supply teacher with pertinent student information for evaluations.
- Comply with all agency policies and procedures.
- Perform other tasks as directed by the teacher or Principal.
Requirements
- High school or GED diploma.
- Prior experience preferred.
Skills
- Proficient written and oral communication.
- Proficient interpersonal skills.
- Proficient behavior management skills.
- Proficient knowledge of educational principles, especially for students with disabilities.
