About the Role

The Premium Audit team plays a major role in creating a stronger, safer Texas by determining the final premium for policyholders at the conclusion of each policy term.

Responsibilities

  • Determine the policyholder's true earned workers' compensation premium.
  • Conduct reviews, interviews and audits on the policyholder’s premises.
  • Analyze the policyholder's financial reconciliations to ensure they match.
  • Compare the policyholder's payroll records with the estimated or actual payroll reported.
  • Determine the appropriate job classification codes for the policyholder's employees by reviewing the workforce and interviewing the policyholder.
  • Reconcile the appropriate job classification code with the code reported and adjusting premium accordingly.
  • Determine scope of operations by reviewing contracts between the policyholder and other entities and applying IRS revenue rulings and workers' compensation statutes and rules to determine whether a true independent contractor relationship exists versus common law employee status.
  • Apply the Texas Basic Manual Rules, Classifications and Rates for Workers' Compensation to the information obtained from the audit to determine the proper premium basis.
  • Provide professional and technical explanations to policyholders and agents concerning proper classifications as to the policyholder's operations.
  • Communicate information in a highly professional manner both verbally and in writing to policyholders, agents and other customers (both internal and external).
  • Recommend proper accounting procedures to policyholders.
  • Identify potential premium fraud by policyholders and forwards fraud referrals to the Special Investigations Department.
  • Contribute to the effectiveness of Underwriting and Safety Services by conveying physical, financial and other pertinent information gained or determined by analysis of the policyholder's operations and financial structure.
  • Provide advanced premium audit expertise to staff, management, policyholders, and agents.
  • Train staff, policyholders, and agents on auditing as requested.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on projects and process discussions.
  • Recommend and document premium audit procedures.
  • Assist management in coordinating departmental workflow, staff, and resources.
  • Consult on complex premium audit matters.
