About the Role

The Cook is responsible for implementing food services in Early Child Care Programs serving children ages 0-5, ensuring compliance with Department of Health, CACFP, and Head Start Performance Standards. This includes preparing USDA-approved meals, maintaining kitchen sanitation, and managing food stocks and nutrition records.

Responsibilities

• Preparing nutritious meals considering children's cultures and individual nutritional needs.
• Preparing meals in accordance with USDA, Head Start, and CACFP guidelines, using child nutritional needs and age-specific portion sizes.
• Adhering strictly to health, safety, food handling, and sanitation requirements.
• Preparing and participating in family-style meals for children, volunteers, and staff.
• Maintaining nutrition record-keeping and reporting as directed.
• Reviewing food and supplies order sheets.
• Storing food and supplies properly.
• Monitoring and maintaining proper food temperatures.
• Maintaining cleanliness of all kitchen materials and supplies.
• Maintaining awareness of center allergies and concerns.
• Training assistants, substitutes, and volunteers to support kitchen duties.
• Coordinating delivery of food to classrooms.
• Attending staff meetings and relevant trainings.
• Standing for relatively long periods while working and lifting 25 pounds.
• Performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Current food handler’s certificate.
• Experience in purchasing and preparing culturally diverse foods for groups.
• Knowledge of early childhood nutrition.
• Basic computer skills for record keeping.
• Ability to lift and move heavy or bulky objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
• Clearance through DOI Fingerprint Screening, NYS Central Registry, and Sex Offender Registry.
• Three reference checks.
• Physical examination with updated TB test, varicella, Tdap, and MMR.
• Obtain Mandated Reporter training certificate (every 2 years).
• Comply with agency’s policy and procedure regarding identification and reporting of child abuse and neglect.
• Obtain First Aid/CPR and Preventive Infectious Diseases certificate within the first year of employment.
• Meet all employee health requirements in Article 47 (DOHMH) and Head Start Performance Standards.
• Ability to stand on feet for relatively long periods while working.
• Ability to lift 25 pounds.
