About the Role
The Financial Crime team is responsible for managing the company’s Financial Crime policies, procedures, and controls, including risk assessment, AML compliance, business advisory, and managing high-risk customer escalations. This role involves deputizing for the MLRO and managing a team, providing expert guidance, and acting as a subject matter expert for regulatory obligations.
Responsibilities
- Deputize for the MLRO, managing a growing team of Financial Crime Compliance Professionals.
- Provide advice to first line operational functions and other business areas.
- Support the MLRO in developing and managing AML policies and procedures in line with statutory obligations and company risk appetite.
- Provide expert guidance to 1LoD and 2LoD operations.
- Review escalations related to suspicious activity, sanctions, PEPs, adverse media, complex ownership, and high-risk customers.
- Act as a SME for current and emerging regulatory obligations, ensuring risk assessment and management align with company risk appetite.
- Liaise with Law Enforcement, regulators, and Partner Banks as a primary point of contact for investigations, reporting, audits, and ad hoc requests.
- Establish strong relationships with applicable stakeholders and become the go-to person for FC advisory.
- Develop targeted training for 1LoD and 2LoD financial crime teams and other business areas.
- Feed into the MI framework and highlight financial crime risks to the business.
- Feed into the ongoing maintenance of onboarding and ongoing due diligence controls.
- Assess and update existing controls to at least industry standard.
Requirements
- Solid understanding of complex ownership structures for SME businesses in the UK and US.
- Complex investigation skills, including ownership structures and transaction patterns.
- Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
- Ability to manage multiple ongoing projects within FinCrime and product development.
- Deep technical knowledge of AML/CTF regulations and regulatory expectations.
- Proficient in quantifying abstract threats and aligning client risk profiles with firm risk appetite.
- Confidence to make high-stakes 'go/no-go' decisions on suspicious clients under pressure.
- Skill to explain complex compliance failures to non-experts and justify SAR filings.
- Ability to maintain external awareness of the regulatory environment and update policies and procedures.
- Previous management experience within Financial Crime.
