About the Role

Young Life Saranac Village is seeking a relationally and spiritually minded leader with a passion for retail to join our team as a Retail Manager. This role involves approximately 75% retail operations and 25% marketing and theming. As a Department Head, you will lead a team of Summer Interns and Summer Staff to create environments where guests, staff, and volunteers encounter Jesus Christ through various retail outlets including a camp store, snack bar, and coffee shop.

Responsibilities

  • Intentionally provide opportunities for staff to grow deeper in their relationship with Jesus.
  • Develop an annual personal spiritual growth plan with direction from supervisor.
  • Foster an environment where department staff have opportunities for ongoing spiritual development.
  • Create a ministry of retail statement that communicates goals and practices.
  • Build relationships that reflect the character of God with guests, staff, vendors and neighbors to foster healthy community.
  • Ensure department staff demonstrate the importance of their interpersonal relationships and promote a healthy community.
  • Maintain healthy communication while working with other departments at camp.
  • Network with other retail managers and department leads to learn and share best practices.
  • Demonstrate awareness of development needs of the retail team.
  • Participate in camp events to promote unity and teamwork across departments.
  • Equip servant leaders who anticipate and respond to the needs of our guests, staff and vendors, through Christ-like service.
  • Establish a department posture of service that anticipates guest needs and responds with professionalism.
  • Develop the retail centers (Store, Snack Bar, Coffee Shop) to serve guests’ requests and sustainable business practices.
  • Maintain professional written and verbal communication with staff, guests, volunteers, staff candidates, and vendors.
  • Demonstrate and train exceptional customer service.
  • Demonstrate customer care by assisting customers with inquiries and product selection.
  • Show care and hospitality to all who serve and work within the retail department.
  • Manage with integrity the finances, people, buildings and equipment entrusted to the ministry.
  • Develop systems and train staff to participate in comprehensive stewardship.
  • Ensure financial security throughout the retail department, including cash handling and inventory.
  • Create and manage the financial budget for the retail department.
  • Analyze monthly financial reports and establish goals accordingly.
  • Maintain accurate financial reports (deposits, Concur, POS reports).
  • Create ordering and invoice systems to track inventory and payment processes.
  • Perform an annual physical inventory of the store.
  • Forecast inventory levels and product needs of guests and participate in group purchasing.
  • Adjust inventory levels for seasonality and group size.
  • Evaluate department systems and processes annually, updating documents to reflect accuracy.
  • Engage in annual personnel evaluations for all retail staff.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in using Point of Sale (Square), Office, Outlook and other software applications.
  • Develop understanding for equipment maintenance and operation as needed for retail centers.
  • Participate in weekly guest group information meetings, developing appropriate retail hours based on guest group history and requests.
  • Complete an annual cost analysis for concessions and coffee areas.
  • Utilize the LINK to schedule DIN, routine tasks and preventative maintenance.
  • Identify and provide opportunities for staff in continuing education, leadership development, career-pathing and cross-training through a consistent and accountable evaluation process.
  • Demonstrate a desire to grow through engagement in the Individual Development Plan process and participation in training and development opportunities.
  • Foster department staff participation in the Individual Development Plan process and other training and development opportunities.
  • Intentionally pursue opportunities in mission leadership, personal growth, and professional development.
  • Utilize good hiring and onboarding processes.
  • Equip retail staff team to operate retail centers in the Retail Manager’s absence.
  • Lead department staff in the execution of daily responsibilities with attention to the standards and metrics required for excellent camp operations.
  • Ensure Young Life standards for appearance and cleanliness are met in all retail centers.
  • Create and maintain themes in the retail centers that support overall camp theme and utilize visual merchandising and displays.
  • Operate retail centers and develop re-order processes to support sales.
  • Ensure stock and supplies are at levels to meet guest needs and sales.
  • Receive merchandise for retail areas using defined inventory tracking processes.
  • Demonstrate and train proper food handling and storage guidelines.
  • Develop plan for seasonal food and equipment storage.
  • Follow national retail policies.
  • Execute theft control practices.
  • Participate in retail department training, vendor evaluations, events and assigned impact areas.
  • Maintain a specific camp Retail Operational Guide for each retail area.
  • Engage with weekly camp meetings and spiritual development opportunities.
  • Maintain ServSafe and First Aid/CPR certifications.
  • Regular participation in Young Life trainings and department opportunities.

Requirements

  • Previous business or retail experience preferred.
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office applications and an ability to learn and use all Young Life internal systems.
  • Experience training and leading teams.
  • Demonstrate professionalism in written and verbal communication with guests, vendors, and staff.
  • Demonstrate understanding of Young Life ministry, strategy and mission.
  • Staff must be able to convey a sense of Christ-like hospitality and concern for guests and staff.
  • Responding to the unexpected needs of a guest in a prompt and professional manner is important.
  • All staff members are expected to represent Young Life positively and professionally within the community.
  • Able to work with and minister to the volunteer high school and college-age young people who attend our camp.
  • Must profess a belief in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and Lord.
  • Must subscribe to the statements and policies required of all Young Life staff, including the Young Life Statement of Faith.
  • Employees and volunteers of Young Life, during working and nonworking hours, shall be ready, willing and able to fulfill ministry functions, refrain from conduct and statements that detract from biblical standards, and abide by all policies and practices of Young Life.
