About the Role
Wizcorp is seeking Game Server Programmers to develop exciting multiplayer games for various consoles and environments. This role involves working on network-related systems, game features, and supporting systems like lobbies and matchmaking, with a focus on optimization and performance.
Responsibilities
- Review code from other engineers to ensure quality.
- Work primarily on network-related systems and stay updated with peer features.
- Ensure a smooth multiplayer experience by working on the game itself.
- Focus on peripheral systems such as lobbies, matchmaking, and ranking systems.
- Perform network optimization.
- Assist with server-build deployments.
- Work on low-level game engine components affecting multiplayer experience.
- Implement multiplayer and networked features, and create server builds.
- Create standalone peripheral systems (lobby, matchmaking, etc.).
- Design, test, and debug own code independently.
- Analyze network traffic for problem-solving and debugging.
- Break down large features into engineering tasks and collaborate on completion.
- Decipher and understand complex systems.
- Mentor engineers in engine development best practices.
- Develop systems with a strong focus on optimization and performance.
- Communicate confidently with all company members.
- Estimate own tasks and deliver them in a timely manner.
- Write clear, maintainable code that passes senior engineer review.
- Raise blockers to the project lead promptly.
- Test and document solutions for other developers.
- Implement and uphold software engineering best practices throughout the development lifecycle.
- Take ownership of large code base areas and complex features.
- Take ownership of mission-critical code base areas.
- Coordinate with non-engineering team members for timely feature delivery.
- Determine large feature feasibility and propose solutions.
- Provide programming expertise for large features and architecture suggestions.
- Provide code review analysis to foresee design and implementation problems.
Requirements
- Reside in Japan during employment.
- Several years of work experience implementing real-time networking in games.
- Experience with the release of multiple games.
- Knowledge of low-level networking quirks.
- Proficiency in C++ and willingness to use other appropriate languages.
- Ability to deep-dive into network protocol implementations for improvements.
- Experience implementing lobby and matchmaking systems.
- Ability to write clean, readable, performant code and design architecture.
- Excellent debugging and optimization skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Knowledge of existing optimization techniques.
- Focus on performance and performance analysis.
- Strong math skills.

- Knowledge of and ability to create network protocols for multiplayer games.
- Experience in development and integration of custom peripheral server-side systems (lobby, matchmaking, ranking, etc.).
- University degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline; or relevant professional experience.
- For Japan-based candidates: 3+ years of professional software engineering experience, and 2+ years of professional experience developing game servers.
- For overseas-based candidates: 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, and 6+ years of professional experience developing game servers.
- Solid software engineering abilities (good code hygiene, familiarity with various coding patterns, etc.).
- Strong experience with C++ and C#.
- Good experience in a variety of programming languages used for peripheral server-side systems.
- Comfortable with source code management systems (Git, SVN, Perforce, etc.).
- At least conversational Japanese proficiency - JLPT N3 or above.
- English proficiency (ability to read, write, and discuss technical matters).
- Experience with Go, Java, shell scripting (Bash, PowerShell, etc.) is preferred.
- Experience with other game engines such as Unreal, Unity, open source engines, or others is preferred.
- At least 3 years of experience in the video game industry is preferred.
- Worked on at least 1 released game is preferred.
