About the Role

Provides direct care to residents and assists with activities of daily living, offering effective, timely, and quality health care assistance and related support for nursing facility residents.

Responsibilities

• Change gown clothing and assist residents with undressing/dressing as necessary.
• Assist residents with bowel and bladder functions.
• Assist residents in preparing for social programs, activities, and appointments.
• Assist residents with lifting, turning, moving, positioning, and transporting residents.
• Assist residents to walk with or without self-help devices as instructed.
• Assist with the care of the dying resident, maintaining hope, dignity, and love.
• Provide post-mortem care as instructed.
• Facilitate and help the resident to complete personal care, including hair, nail, dental hygiene, and feminine hygiene.
• Maintain facial hair.
• Provide bathing, dressing, grooming, and related personal care.
• Provide eye and ear care for residents.
• Assist residents to have clothes purchased, laundered, and repaired as needed.
• Take and properly record elder's vital signs.
• Observe and report elders’ wellbeing.
• Change soiled linen and bedding as required.
• Dispose of soiled or contaminated items in accordance with facility policy on blood borne pathogens.
• Make beds as needed.
• Put extra blankets on the beds as requested.
• Ensure residents have fresh drinking water during each care delivery.
• Keep bed linens tight to avoid wrinkles.
• Perform general cleaning of equipment used.
• Observe residents' well-being and report changes to the appropriate supervisor.
• Maintain intake and output records as instructed.
• Weigh and measure residents as instructed.
• Participate in and receive the nursing report on assigned shift.
• Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information.
• Report suspected abuse of a resident or inappropriate behavior toward a resident to the charge nurse immediately.
• Assist residents in preparation for meals.
• Serve food trays and assist with feeding as needed.
• Record or chart the resident’s food intake.
• Perform after meal care.
• Encourage Elder’s participation in food preparation, service, and clean up.
• Assist with preparing meals and storing food as directed.
• Encourage and make available healthy snacks.
• Support the Elder in adhering to special diet requirements.
• Obey safety rules of St. John’s United.
• Identify, report, and/or correct obvious safety hazards.
• Attend mandatory safety in-services.
• Utilize proper body mechanics when transferring residents.
• Follow established policies and procedures regarding exposure to blood/body fluids.
• Wear and/or use safety equipment and supplies.
• Support the growth and actively engage in the Eden Alternative philosophy.
• Follow the St. John’s Guidelines for Customer Service.
• Follow policy and procedures on TB testing.
• Follow policy and procedures on annual influenza vaccinations.
• Attend all mandatory in-services.
• Attend and participate in scheduled training and educational classes.
• Perform other duties as assigned by Nurse Managers or person in charge of area where work is being done.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Prior experience in a human service or health care setting preferred.
• Must possess a current Montana State Nurses Aide Certification.
• Skill in observation of human behaviors or changes of condition.
• Ability to understand written and verbal communication.
• Ability to interact effectively and professionally with residents, family members, and coworkers.
• Ability to work independently and in a team.
• Ability to understand and follow safety policies and procedures.
• Need to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to successfully pass the required state certification exam.
• Ability to use various health care supplies and equipment, including blood pressure devices, thermometers, wheelchairs, lifts, etc.
• Ability to understand resident charts and care plans.
• Ability to relate to and work with the ill, elderly, disabled, emotionally upset, and at times, combative people within the facility.
• Ability to deal with stressful situations (i.e. Death & Dying).
