About the Role
The Director – Assurance Quality is responsible for establishing and maintaining a quality framework for assurance engagements conducted outside the Audit & Assurance service line. This role provides leadership in the development, implementation, and oversight of assurance frameworks, methodologies, monitoring activities, and remediation programs to ensure consistent, high-quality engagement outcomes. A key focus is the establishment and operation of a firm-wide assurance engagement inspection program.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain quality frameworks, methodologies, policies, guidance, and tools supporting assurance engagements.
- Establish consistent quality expectations and engagement performance requirements across assurance service offerings.
- Monitor changes to professional standards, regulatory requirements, and industry practices, assessing their implications for assurance methodologies.
- Collaborate with service line leadership to embed quality requirements into engagement delivery processes.
- Develop practical templates, guidance materials, and resources that promote consistency, scalability, and compliance.
- Facilitate technical consultations on assurance methodology matters and provide guidance on complex engagement issues.
- Build and maintain a risk-based monitoring framework covering assurance engagements across the firm.
- Develop quality indicators and reporting mechanisms to assess engagement quality and identify emerging risks.
- Analyze quality trends, inspection findings, and consultation themes to identify areas requiring additional support or intervention.
- Prepare reporting and insights for firm leadership regarding the effectiveness of assurance quality processes.
- Support service lines in responding to regulatory reviews, quality assessments, and other assurance-related inspections.
- Design, implement, and manage a firm-wide assurance engagement inspection program.
- Determine inspection scope, selection criteria, and review methodologies based on risk assessments and strategic priorities.
- Lead or oversee engagement inspections to evaluate compliance with applicable standards, methodologies, and firm policies.
- Communicate inspection findings to engagement teams and service line leadership constructively and practically.
- Maintain documentation and reporting of inspection outcomes and monitor closure of identified actions.
- Lead root cause analysis activities arising from inspection findings, quality reviews, and other monitoring activities.
- Design, implement, and monitor remediation plans to address identified deficiencies.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of remedial actions and recommend further improvements.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement across assurance practices.
- Identify opportunities to enhance methodologies, processes, and quality management activities.
- Partner with service lines and Learning & Development teams to identify assurance capability gaps and quality risks.
- Develop targeted learning programs informed by inspection findings, monitoring activities, technical consultations, and emerging assurance risks.
- Design and deliver workshops, webinars, guidance materials, and other learning resources.
- Support assurance practitioners in developing technical capability and professional judgment.
- Build communities of practice that encourage knowledge sharing and consistent application of assurance methodologies.
- Develop strong working relationships with leaders across all assurance-performing service lines.
- Act as a trusted advisor on assurance quality matters and quality management systems.
- Facilitate collaboration between APPD, service line leadership, and subject matter specialists.
- Represent the firm in discussions with regulators, industry bodies, and professional associations.
- Contribute to strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing the firm's assurance capabilities and reputation.
Requirements
- Strong background in external audit and assurance gained from a reputable professional services firm.
- Advanced knowledge of International Standards on Auditing and Assurance.
- Experience in audit quality initiatives and activities, including file inspections, regulatory reviews, the design and production of resources, and the design and facilitation of learning sessions.
- An ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
- Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders effectively.
- Experience developing and implementing strategies aligned with business objectives.
- Demonstrated leadership and people management skills.
