About the Role

The Federal Public Defender for the Western District of Texas is seeking a Research and Writing Specialist for the Capital Habeas Unit in Austin. This attorney role focuses on advanced research and writing for federal habeas corpus relief for indigent, death-sentenced prisoners across Texas courts.

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced research and writing on claims for federal habeas corpus relief.
  • Review and analyze complex records to identify claims and evidentiary needs.
  • Collaborate with attorneys, mitigation specialists, investigators, and experts.
  • Maintain close and regular contact with clients.
  • Conduct field work, including gathering records and investigations.
  • Stay current on developments in habeas corpus, criminal procedure, and relevant forensic science and mental health issues.
  • Analyze legal decisions, statutes, and related materials.
  • Prepare summaries, digests, and research compilations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited law school.
  • Eligible to be licensed in the relevant federal courts.
  • Strong legal research and word-processing skills.
  • Clear and concise writing ability.
  • Ability to analyze complex legal issues and set priorities to meet critical deadlines.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for excellence in criminal defense.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients, witnesses, colleagues, and court and agency personnel.
  • Develop cultural competencies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-based practice and independently.
  • Employment contingent on a satisfactory background check (FBI name & fingerprints).
