About the Role

Become a physical education coach at Kids in the Game, a Certified B Corporation, and help inspire the next generation by providing sports and skill development to children. You will be part of a network of over 150 coaches making a positive impact in the lives of youth across New York City.

Responsibilities

  • Develop engaging lesson plans catering to various skill levels and learning styles.
  • Independently lead 45-minute PE classes for 30-60 students in diverse school settings.
  • Implement safety instructions and conduct equipment checks to ensure a safe environment.
  • Utilize best practices in child behavior management for an orderly class environment.
  • Adapt plans to meet the diverse needs of students in adaptive PE settings.
  • Assess student learning and provide constructive feedback.
  • Build lesson plans that progress skills and gameplay over time.
  • Discuss student progression with Program Managers and school administration.
  • Complete progress reports and report cards.
  • Encourage active participation through positive reinforcement in safe and inclusive spaces.
  • Engage in activities alongside students, balancing participation and supervision.
  • Model and promote positive character development and healthy peer interactions.
  • Use positive language when engaging with students.
  • Act as an ambassador for Kids in the Game, fostering positive relationships with stakeholders.
  • Communicate effectively with all stakeholders to ensure alignment with program goals.
  • Conduct weekly check-ins with supervisors to provide program updates.
  • Communicate proactively with supervisors regarding support needs or incidents.
  • Maintain a safe and organized play environment by inspecting equipment and enforcing guidelines.
  • Actively supervise all students to ensure a safe and structured environment.
  • Incorporate appropriate warm-ups, cool-downs, and injury-prevention techniques.
  • Respond appropriately to injuries, behavioral challenges, or conflicts.
  • Arrive prepared, on time, and ready to engage with youth.
  • Be present daily on-site to prepare for classes and set up spaces.
  • Be prepared in proper uniform daily.
  • Uphold the organization’s mission and values.
  • Demonstrate integrity, reliability, and a strong work ethic.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or advanced educational degree in physical education is highly preferred.
  • Ability to learn quickly and understand new concepts related to the physical education curriculum.
  • At least two years of experience leading physical education and fitness classes in school-based settings.
  • Prior experience working in adaptive physical education programs is a plus.
  • Demonstrate positive group management and engagement.
  • Ability to work within a team environment and independently.
  • Act as a Kids in the Game ambassador.
  • Communicate efficiently with the People & Culture and Program Management team.
  • Be a positive and influential role model for children.
  • Contribute meaningfully to the school culture.
  • Up-to-date physical and tuberculosis test documentation required before starting.
  • Must pass Federal and NY State background checks.
  • Willing to complete Department of Education fingerprinting before starting.
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications are a plus.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to walk to and from nearby program locations while supervising children.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, and reach to engage with children.
  • Ability to climb stairs in school buildings or community facilities.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25–40 pounds.
  • Ability to participate in active games and movement-based activities.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to maintain visual and auditory awareness to supervise children effectively.
